Kerch iron-ore basin. Mineralogy almanac / Керченский железорудный бассейн. Минералогический альманах

The issue contains the most comprehensive description of the Kerch iron- ore basin, including historical and geological sketches. Besides ore deposits some other geological phenomena of the region are described. Mineralogical decription of 160 mineral species is the main part of the volume, the most interesting minerals being characterized in details.

The author has been studing the Kerch mineralogy for more then 20 years and at present is one of the most knowledgeable experts of the region.

Key concepts in geomorphology / Ключевые понятия в геоморфологии

Key Concepts in Geomorphology is a book about our planet’s dynamic surface, a place where Earth and atmosphere meet and life thrives. By its very nature, geomorphology, the study of Earth surface processes and history, is an integrative discipline. As geomorphologists, we strive to make sense of the complicated web of interactions shaping mountains and valleys, moving sediment and water downslope, and changing the shape of continents and ocean basins over millennia. A deep understanding of geomorphology requires not only expertise in solid-Earth geology but also the ability to use principles of physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics to understand Earth surface processes and the evolution of topography over short and long timescales. <...>

Khibiny / Хибины

In the book, data on geology, petrography of the rocks of the Khibiny massif, description of 70 mineral localities, as well as a brief historical report about industrial development of the massif are given. The main section of the book is devoted to the description of occurrences, morphology and properties of 436 minerals found within the massif. In addition, brief information about 35 doubtful or insufficiently investigated minerals is given in a separate section at the end of the book. The book includes 772 original microprobe analyses and contains 592 original colour and SEM-BSE photos, and also 342 references.

Kiruna-Type Iron Oxide-Apatite Ores and "Apatitites" of the Bafq District, Iran, with an Emphasis on the REE Geochemistry of their Apatites

The Bafq metallogenic province in Iran contains world class Kiruna-type apatite-iron oxide ores, apatite-rich magmatic rocks called "apatitites", REE, Th-U, Pb-Zn and recently reported Cu(-Au?) mineralisation. The metallogenesis is related to magmatic events that accompanied a major late Precambrian rifting event within Gondwanaland. The magmatic activity is subvolcanic to volcanic, is characterised by thebimodal association of rhyolites and spilitic basalts and is accompanied by a regional alkali metasomatism.

The iron deposits are commonly hosted by hydrothermally altered and metasomatised rhyolitic rocks, which are either interstratified with volcano-sedimentary sequences, or form large subvolcanic and volcanic masses. The iron ore is dominantly a Ti-V-poor massive magnetite with subordinate hematite, and is commonly accompanied by apatite. Apatite also occurs within the magmatic "apatitites', which are spatially and temporally closely associated with the iron ores.

Kola Peninsula. Mineralogical Almanac / Кольский полуостров. Минералогический альманах

This special issue of the Mineralogical Almanac is devoted to the Kola Peninsula. The main article by I.V. Pekov and A.P. Nikolaev is on the mineralogy of peralkaline pegmatites and hydrothermal bodies of the Koashva apatite deposit in Khibiny. The history of its exploration and geology are outlined, the pegmatite-hydrothermal complex is characterized and 127 minerals are described.

An article by A.V. Voloshin is focused on the history of mineralogical studies of the rare-element granite pegmatites of Kolmozero and Voron'i Tundras and the amazonite pegmatites of West Keivy. The paper by Yu.L Voitekhovsky is devoted to almandine and its deposits in West Keivy. A.V. Voloshin, I.V. Pekov and V.V. Borisova give a historical review with statistical data on 264 new minerals first discovered in the Kola region. A special article is devoted to the collection by V.G. Grishin, one of the most interesting modern collections of the Kola minerals.

Komatiite / Коматииты

The time traveller was becoming despondent. Here she was, 2.7 billion years back in time, and she had spent most of the day flying over a flat, featureless plane. True, some hours back, she had passed over a chain of fiery stratovolcanoes strung out along the margin of the continent, no doubt marking the trace of an active subduction zone.

Kriging in the shadows: Geostatistical interpolation for remote sensing / Кригинг в тени: геостатистическая интерполяция для дистанционного зондирования

It is often useful to estimate obscured or missing remotely sensed data. Traditional interpolation methods, such as nearest-neighbor or bilinear resampling, do not take full advantage of the spatial information in the image. An alternative method, a geostatistical technique known as indicator krigingo is described and demonstrated using a Landsat Thematic Mapper image in southern Chiapas, Mexico. The image was first classified into  pasture and nonpasture land cover. For each pixel that was obscured by cloud or cloud shadow, the probability that it was pasture was assigned by the algorithm. An exponential omnidirectional variogram model was used to characterize the spatial continuity of the image for use in the kriging algorithm. Assuming a cutoff probability level of 50%, the error was shown to be 17% with no obvious spatial bias but with some tendency to categorize nonpasture as pasture (overestimation). While this is a promising result, the method's practical application in other missing data problems for remotely sensed images will depend on the amount and spatial pattern of the unobscured pixels and missing pixels and the success of the spatial continuity model used. <...>

La Candelaria and the Punta del Cobre district, Chile: early cretaceous iron-oxide Cu-Au(-Zn-Ag) mineralization

La Candelaria is the largest of the iron oxide Cu-Au(-Zn-Ag) deposits in the Punta del Cobre belt, which also hosts the Punta del Cobre district, sensu strictu. The Punta del Cobre belt lies within an Early Cretaceous continental volcanic arc/marine back-arc basin terrane. The volcanic arc and marine carbonate back-arc sequences are intruded by Early Cretaceous granitoid plutons that form part of the Chilean Coastal Batholith. The deposits of the Punta del Cobre belt occur along the eastern margin of the batholith within (e.g., La Candelaria) or just outside the contact metamorphic aureole (e.g., the Punta del Cobre district). Andesitic volcanic and volcaniclastic host rocks are intensely altered by biotite-quartz-magnetite. This style of alteration extends much further to the east of the intrusive contact than the metamorphic mineral associations in the overlying rocks that are clearly zoned outboard. Local areas of intense calcic amphibole veining that overprints all rock types occur within the contact metamorphic aureole.
