Locked in time. Animal behavior unearthed in 50 extraordinary fossils / Запертые во времени. Свойства животных в 50 необычных ископаемых останках

Do you remember the first time you saw a dinosaur skeleton? With your head tilted back, eyes wide open, and experiencing that overwhelming, uncontrollable “wow” factor? For many of us, coming face to face with an intimidating colossus of bones and teeth, an animal unlike anything alive today, would have filled you with an incredible sense of wonder and excitement.
But have you ever pondered what dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals did in their daily lives? Maybe what they ate or if they got sick? Perhaps how the animals cared for their babies and whether they laid eggs or gave birth to live young? Finding answers to these apparently simple questions is an almighty, complex challenge for paleontologists studying fossils. Some fossils, however, are so remarkable that they record direct evidence of such behaviors, capturing specific moments in the lives of long-extinct species. These are among the most fascinating, awe-inspiring, and exceptional of all fossils ever found <...>

Log-normal distributions across the sciences: Keys and clues / Логнормальнjе распределения наука[: ключи и подсказки

As the need grows for conceptualization, formalization, and abstraction in biology,so too does math- ematics’relevance to the field (Fagerström et al. 1996).Math- ematics is particularly important for analyzing and characterizing random variation of, for example, size and weight of individuals in populations, their sensitivity to chemicals, and time-to-event cases, such as the amount of time an individ- ual needs to recover from illness. The frequency distribution of such data is a major factor determining the type of statistical analysis that can be validly carried out on any data set. Many widely used statistical methods, such as ANOVA (analysis of variance) and regression analysis, require that the data be normally distributed, but only rarely is the frequency distribution of data tested when these techniques are used. <...>

Logistic regression for geologically constrained mapping of Gold Potential, Baguio District, Philippines / Логистическая регрессия для геологически ограниченного картографирования золоторудного потенциала, район Багио, Филиппины

An application of logistic regression to mapping of gold potential in the Baguio district of the Philippines is described. Categorical map data such as lithologic units and proximity classes of curvi-linear features, based on spatial association analyses, are quantified systematically and used as independent variables in logistic regression to predict the probability for presence or absence of gold mineralization.

Longwall Mining / Выборка руды длинными слоями параллельно этажным штрекам

The concept of longwall mining in the United States dates back to the late 19th century when wide faces were used for coal extraction in the Pittsburgh seam. But modern, fully mechanized longwall mining employing plows and frame supports was first introduced from West Germany in the early 1950s in southern West Virginia. It was used mainly for thin seam mining. During the 1950s and 1960s, the practice did not expand. In fact, due to its poor performance, only a few mines in southern West Virginia employed this technique.

Low-grade metamorphism / Метаморфизм низких фаций

Metamorphism is broadly a process of solid-state change in the mineralogy, texture and chemistry of rocks in the Earth's crust. It provides a powerful record of change in the Earth's most active settings where metamorphism has proceeded in response to global tectonics.

Lower kimmeridgian biostratigraphy in Poland / Биостратиграфия нижнего киммериджа Польши

The present study of Lower Kimmeridgian biostratigraL ^ H phy in Poland is based on the following ammonites: Ataxioceras, Ne114 brodites, Katroliceras, Glochiceras, Streblites, Taramelliceras, Idoceras, Sutneria, Orthosphinctes, Lithacoceras, Aspidoceras, Amoeboceras, Ringsteadia, Rasenia, Pictonia, and Zonovia. The analysis of this fauna confirms that the Lower Kimmeridgian sediments in Poland, also in its northern parts, have rightly been subdivided into the following three zones: the lower one — Sutneria platynota, the middle one — Ataxioceras hypselocyclum, and the upper one — Katroliceras divisum (partly).

Lyell: the past is the key to the present / Лайель: прошлое ключ к настоящему

Charles Lyell was appointed to the Chair of Geology at King's College London in February 1831, and proceeded to present a series of 12 lectures based on his recently published book Principles of Geology. According to his biographer, Leonard G. Wilson (1972), Lyell took a lot of trouble to prepare illustrations and demonstrations in support of his geological arguments. The lectures were open to the general public and attracted large audiences, including a number of his peers in the Geological Society, their wives and friends, who outnumbered the College students.

Magma flow directions of shallow dykes from the East Greenland volcanic margin inferred from magnetic fabric studies

The role played by plume-generated crustal magmatic complexes in the segmentation of volcanic margins is highlighted by a preliminary study of magma flow directions in shallow intrusives from the East Greenland volcanic margin. We investigate the magmatic texture using anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility for eight dykes of tholeitic affinity belonging to a dyke swarm associated with the Tertiary opening of the North Atlantic Ocean. The thickness of the sampled dykes ranges from 3 to 37 m. The dykes are of doleritic texture and contain up to 12% of opaque minerals and 35% of plagioclase laths. Dykes showing a magnetic foliation plane within the dyke plane, i.e. a magnetic fabric usually attributed to magmatic processes, represent 40% of the samples from the studied swarm. These dykes have a low degree of anisotropy and their ellipsoid of magnetic susceptibility is strongly oblate. Inverse magnetic fabrics, where the maximum principal susceptibility axis lies near the pole to the dyke account for 60% of the data. We interpret these inverse fabrics either as alteration minerals with highly prolate ellipsoids of magnetic susceptibility or primary titanomagnetites with oblate ellipsoid of low anisotropy. The flow direction is inferred for normal fabric dykes using the mirror imbrication of magnetic lineation. Analysis of thin sections shows a good agreement between magnetic fabric directions and phenocryst preferred orientations. The inferred flow directions are predominantly horizontal, throwing a new light on volcanic margin development.

Magmatic Iron Ores and Associated Mineralisation: Examples from the Chilean High Andes and Coastal Cordillera

The El Laco magnetite-apatite ore deposits in the Andean Cordillera of northern Chile occur as massive, tabular bodies, as stratified, pyroclastic ores, and as crosscutting dykes and vein complexes. The ore deposits and surrounding volcanic rocks, mainly andesites, are Plio-Pleistocene in age and preserve many of their original volcanic textures and structures. All the field and laboratory data are consistent with an origin by eruption and shallow intrusion of a high-temperature, volatile-rich, iron-oxide magma. A number of other iron-oxide-apatite deposits of Cenozoic age in the Andean Cordillera, and a belt of Cretaceous iron deposits in the Coastal Cordillera of Chile also have features that suggest a magmatic origin. Associated with these magmatic ore deposits are economic and sub-economic concentrations of Cu, Au, U, and REE.
