My main objective in writing this book has been to review the processes involved in present-day magma generation and their relationship to global tectonic processes. Clearly, these are fundamental to our understanding of the petrogenesis of ancient volcanic and plutonic sequences, the original tectonic setting of which may have been obscured by subsequent deformation and metamorphism.
Igneous rocks, apart from those few which are wholly or partly glassy, are composed of minerals and a knowledge of these minerals therefore is one logical starting point for study. Indeed the microscopic determination in thin sections of the content, abundance, and textural relations of component minerals remains, as it was for classical petrographers, the most widely used tool in the investigation of igneous rocks
The purpose of this book is to stimulate the reader ’ s interest in magmatic rocks and processes, to develop key skills of describing, classifying and naming such rocks, and to show how much we can learn about igneous processes from careful, informed interpretation of rock textures, mineralogy and geochemistry. The book is aimed primarily at the intermediate - level student of geology who already has a basic knowledge of igneous rocks, but anyone starting from scratch should fi nd that the opening chapter and relevant boxes –together with the Glossary –provide the minimum introduction they require. The emphasis throughout the book will be on practical investigation, mainly by means of the polarizing microscope; basic mineral - identifi cation data have therefore been included to provide –between one set of covers –all that the student needs during a typical igneous practical class. <...>
Decades of field and microscope studies and more recent quantitative geochemical analyses have resulted in a vast, and sometimes overwhelming, array of nomenclature and terminology associated with igneous rocks. Under the auspices of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), a group of petrologists from around the world has laboured for more than 30 years to collate these terms, gain international agreement on their usage, and reassess
the methods by which we categorize and name igneous rocks.
В тезисах Докладов Второго семинара по геодинамике Кавказа изложены представления различных геологических школ и направлений Советского Союза об основных закономерностях становления земной коры и верхней мантии Кавказа, а также соседних стран.
Проведение в I9B6 году III семинара-школы "Геодинамика Кавказа" на территории Армянской ССР совпадает с общей душ геодинамики, как перспективного научного направления,тенденцией развития: перехода от общих глобальных вопросов к вопросам частным, региональным. Выяснение глубинных причин геологических явлений, современных и прошлых эпох приближают к прогнозу поисков полезных ископаемых, прогнозу сейсмичности, инженерно-геологическому, способствуют решению задач экологических - в целом столь важных для богатых полезными ископаемыми недр региона Кавказа, региона густонаселенного с высоким уровнем развития промышленности. Широкая тематика рассматриваемых в тезисах докладов вопросов характеризует,таким образом, современное состояние геодинамики и региональную специфику задач, стоящих перед науками о Земле в развитии народного хозяйства и охранных мероприятий.
Illustrated Pollen Terminology is a collection of palynological terms and wellillustrated with light and electron microscope images. The focus of this book is on the pollen of seed plants, predominantly angiosperms; therefore, it rarely explains features unique to spores or gymnosperms. A strict rationalization of terms on the basis of practical criteria has been attempted for this book. Where necessary, definitions have been reworded, newly circumscribed, or brought into focus. Technology used to examine solid materials at the nanometer scale has existed for decades, but the interest in applying these methods to reservoir rocks has increased dramatically in recent years. Shale gas and shale oil reservoirs require this level of imaging to resolve the pore space, and other tight rocks benefit as well, particularly when clay-hosted porosity is common or wettability is difficult to characterize. A significant aspect of organic-rich reservoirs that is unique to them is the common occurrence of organic-hosted pores, which are portrayed in several chapters of this Memoir.
This book contains papers presented at the Engineering Foundation Conference on mineral matter in fuels held on November 2-7, 1997 in Kona, Hawaii. The conference is one of a continuing series that was initiated by the CEGB Marchwood Engineering Laboratories in 1963. The conference was to be eventually organised by the Engineering Foundation as the need for multi-disciplinary work related to controlling ash effects in combustors became apparent. The conference covers both the science and the applications. The papers also present case histories, particularly for current fuel technologies, developments in advanced technologies for power generation and mathematical modelling of these processes.
