Sulphide minerals are the important resources of nonferrous metals, which are widely used in many fields such as electronics, chemical engineering, aviation, transportation, construction and metallurgy etc. Flotation technology is the most important method to beneficiate sulphide ores to obtain concentrate containing nonferrous metals since it has been used in industry at the end of the 19th century. As early as in the 1930s-1950s, considerable amount of fundamental research had been conducted on the flotation of sulphide minerals based on wettability, electrokinetics and chemical interactions.

Electron crystallography. Novel approaches for structure determination of nanosized materials / Электронная кристаллография. Новые подходы к определению структуры наноразмерных материалов

The discovery of electron diffraction in the laboratories of C.J. Davisson and G.P. Thomson in 1927 certainly ranks as one of the monumental discoveries in the history of science. Soon after this invention, it was realised that electrons - like X-rays - are diffracted by the atoms in matter and thus can be used for structure determination. Because the attainable scattered  intensities for electrons are about 106 times larger than for X-rays, electron diffraction allows us to study the interior structure of matter down to a few cubic-nanometers in size. This is far beyond the capabilities of X-ray crystallography or even a modern synchrotron.

Recent advances in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracture stimulation technology have opened up vast new oil and natural gas sources in shale formations. Shale gas production in the United States was 5 trillion cubic feet (141 billion m3) in 2010, representing 23% of the total U.S. dry-gas production (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012). Shale gas production has also been established in Canada, and initial exploration drilling has begun outside North America, most notably in Poland, Argentina, India, Australia, and China.

Elements of mineralogy. Emphasizing the variations in minerals / Элементы минералогии. Подчеркивая различия в минералах

One purpose of this book is to advance the idea that many minerals are not fixed and simple in composition. Some years ago Professor D. Jerome Fisher of the University of Chicago pointed out that the writer's Elements of Optical Mineralogy had made such a treatment available to advanced students for some years, but that no elementary textbook, in any language, presented the subject in a similar way. A result of Dr. Fisher's suggestion has been the preparation of this volume.

Elements of optical mineralogy. An introduction to microscopic petrography. Part III. Determinative tables / Элементы оптической минералогии. Введение в микроскопическую петрографию. Часть III. Определительные таблицы

During the ten years since the publication of the second edition of these tables many new minerals have been described. About fifty of these are included in the third edition of Part II,  which was published in 1933, while nearly seventy are of more recent date. The author has attempted to include in supplementary tables in this printing all the new minerals which seem to be well established and adequately described as to their optical properties. Unfortunately it has not been feasible to incorporate them in the main tables, but this is probably not a very serious difficulty since the minerals in question are all very rare.

It is hoped that the use of colored paper for the table (III) classifying minerals on the basis of their color (and pleochroism) in thin section will make it easy to find the various tables quickly and conveniently

The oil industry has changed much since I first entered it some 30 years ago, and still more dramatically since I completed the first edition of Elements of Petroleum Geology in 1982. In the past 15 years major changes have occurred in the way in which the oil industry is organized and in how it conducts its business.
Traditionally, the leading edge of research was conducted in the laboratories of the oil companies. Now it is conducted within service companies and consultancies. Whereas traditionally the oil companies were regarded as the best employers in terms of opportunity and continuity of employment, today this is no longer true. The service companies and larger consultancies may now provide better long-term career prospects than the major oil companies.
