The Cambrian Fossils of Chengjiang, China The Flowering of Early Animal Life / Кембрийские окаменелости из Чэнцзяна, Китай Расцвет ранней животной жизни

The base of the Cambrian Period is one of the great watersheds n the history of life. In the earlier half of the nineteenth century, Charles Darwin had already recognized the startling change that happens in the fossil record at this horizon, when the fossil remains of metazoans appear in abundance for the first time in many localities around the world. The dawn of the Cambrian marks the appearance of mineralized shells, which apparently originated independently in several animal groups shortly after the beginning of the period.

The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Earth Sciences / Кембриджская энциклопедия наук о Земле

Today the term plate tectonics is not only familiar to scientists, it is entering everyday language and finding its way into dictionaries. The resulting transformation of the way in which we regard the Earth has brought about a reappraisal of the vast accumulation of information about the surface of the Earth collected by geographers, geologists, oceanographers and others over the centuries, reviewing and reinterpreting that information in the comprehensive new framework provided by the new plate tectonic concept. But more than that, this revolution has brought about a change of approach in the scientific study of the Earth. No longer is geology a secondrate descriptive science-it has joined forces with the physical sciences in a new and more cohesive whole to which the term Earth sciences is now so much more appropriate. <...>

The CBRR guide for reporting exploration onformation, mineral resources and mineral reserves / Руководство CBRR по представлению информации о разведке, минеральных ресурсах и запасах полезных ископаемых

The Brazilian Commission for Resources and Reserves (CBRR—Comissão Brasileira de Recursos e Reservas) was established in 2015, conceived as an initiative from three of the most important and representative associations within the Brazilian mineral sector: the Associação Brasileira de Empresas de Pesquisa Mineral (ABPM—Brazilian Association of Mineral Exploration Companies), Agência para o Desenvolvimento e Inovação do Setor Mineral Brasileiro (ADIMB—Agency for Mineral Development and Innovation of the Brazilian Mining Sector) and Instituto Brasileiro de Mineração (IBRAM—Brazilian Mining Institute).

The Changing Earth Exploring Geology and Evolution / Изменяющаяся Земля. Изучение геологии и эволюции

Earth is a dynamic planet that has changed continuously during its 4.6 billion years of existence. The size, shape, and geographic distribution of the continents and ocean basins have changed through time, as have the atmosphere and biota. As scientists and concerned citizens, we have become increasingly aware of how fragile our planet is and, more importantly, how interdependent all of its various systems and subsystems are.
We also have learned that we cannot continually pollute our environment and that our natural resources are limited and, in most cases, nonrenewable. Furthermore, we are coming to realize how central geology is to our everyday lives. For example, on March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck Japan, killing more than 20,000 people and generating a tsunami that wreaked destruction along the coast of northeastern Japan, as well as damaging three nuclear power plants and causing radioactive leakage in one of them.

The changing Earth. Rates of geomorphological processes / Меняющаяся Земля. Скорость геоморфологических процессов

An understanding of rates of land surface change has always been a central focus of geomorphological research. Among the questions which require a knowledge of rates of change are the following: How important is climate as a control of geomorphological processes? To what extent are humans influencing landform development? What is the potential useful life time of a particular engineering structure? How can environments be transformed by future global environmental changes? What is the relative significance of different geomorphological processes? How much time is required for a particular landform assemblage to develop? <...>

The Channeled Scabland

As the Mariner and Viking spacecrafts photographed the large channels on Mars, they generated a renewed interest in the erosional effects of large quantities of running water. As the debate continues whether these channels were caused by catastrophic floods, wind, lava or mudflows, it is imperative to examine, in the field, the morphologic criteria which appears to be diagnostic of catastrophic flooding. Hence this field conference to the Channeled Scabland.

The chemical physics of surfaces / Химическая физика поверхностей

There have been two dominant models used in describing the chemical and electronic behavior of a surface. One is the atomistic model, or the “surface molecule” model; the other is the band model, often called for emphasis the “rigid band” model. The atomistic model has been preferred in general in discussions of the chemical processes at a solid surface; the rigid band model is often preferred in discussions of electron exchange between the solid (especially a semiconductor) and a surface group, where, for example, the conductivity of the solid is changed.
