Mineral physics and crystallography: a handbook of physical constants /

The purpose of this Handbook is to provide, in highly accessible form, selected critical data for professional and student solid Earth and planetary geophysicists. Coverage of topics and authors were carefully chosen to fulfill these objectives.

These volumes represent the third version of the "Handbook of Physical Constants." Several generations of solid Earth scientists have found these handbooks to be the most frequently used item in their personal library. The first version of this Handbook was edited by F. Birch, J. F. Schairer, and H. Cecil Spicer and published in 1942 by the Geological Society of America (GSA) as Special Paper 36. The second edition, edited by Sydney P. Clark, Jr., was also published by GSA as Memoir 92 in 1966. Since 1966, our scientific knowledge of the Earth and planets has grown enormously, spurred by the discovery and verification of plate tectonics and the systematic exploration of the solar system.

The present revision was initiated, in part, by a 1989 chance remark by Alexandra Navrotsky asking what the Mineral Physics (now Mineral and Rock Physics) Committee of the American Geophysical Union could produce that would be a tangible useful product. At the time I responded, "update the Handbook of Physical Constants." As soon as these words were uttered, I realized that I could edit such a revised Handbook. I thank Raymond Jeanloz for his help with initial suggestions of topics, the AGU's Books Board, especially Ian McGregor, for encouragement and enthusiastic support. Ms. Susan Yamada, my assistant, deserves special thanks for her meticulous stewardship of these volumes. I thank the technical reviewers listed below whose efforts, in all cases, improved the manuscripts.

Mollusca and crustacea of the miocene formations of New Jersey /

The fossils of the Miocene beds of New Jersey, like those of the Cretaceous and Eocene beds, have never until now been systematically studied or recorded. Many of them which are as yet peculiar to the deposits of the State have, however, been described haphazard, as it were, by different writers, with scarcely any other object in view than that of describing the species which happened to fall into their hands. In this way a few of the most prominent forms have become known, but very few species are mentioned in any of.the lists of Miocene fossils as pertaining to the New Jersey fauna.

Ore petrology /

This book is concerned with the study of ores as rocks—that is, with ore petrology.
For much of the last three hundred years—and certainly for much of the twentieth century—most students of ore genesis have regarded the majority of metalliferous deposits as exotic entities, derived from extraneous sources and superimposed on geological situations to which they bore little or no genetic relationship. Almost the only exceptions have been those, such as ores of chromium and nickel, that have apparently formed as part of the igneous rocks that enclose them.

Origin and evolution of Earth /

Over the past four decades, Earth scientists have made great strides in understanding our planet’s workings and history. We understand as never before how plate tectonics shapes our planet’s surface, how life can be sustained over billions of years, and how geological, biological, atmospheric, and oceanic processes interact to produce climate—and climatic change. Yet at the most basic level, this progress has served principally to lay bare more fundamental questions about Earth.

Permian period.

Petroleum geology of the Persian gulf /

The intention of this book is to provide a detailed synthesis of the available information published on the petroleum geology of the Persian Gulf. Despite the intensive petroleum exploration which has taken place in the Persian Gulf over the past seventy years, relatively little has been published in the petroleum geology literature. One of the main reasons for this is that many of the studies are undertaken either for or by oil companies, who, for competitive reasons, impose restrictions on publication to maintain confidentiality. This information will aid in estimating oil and gas reserves as well as improving field development technology. Much work remains to be done regarding the geology of the Persian Gull. The need for a book on the geology of the Persian Gulf is therefore clear, and it is hoped that it will continue to provide a useful reference manual and resource of ideas for students as well as professionals. <...>

Physical Geodesy /

Almost every geodetic measurement depends in a fundamental way on the earth’s gravity field. Therefore, the study of the physical properties of the gravity field and their geodetic application, which are the subject of physical geodesy, forms an essential part of the geodesist’s education. During the ten years that have passed since the writing of The Earth and Its Gravity Field by Heiskanen and Vening Meinesz, geodesy has progressed enormously. To incorporate the results of this progress, which has been theoretical as well as practical, in a new edition of that book became increasingly impossible. It was necessary to write an entirely new textbook, one that is different in both scope and treatment. The great increase in the amount of available information required a strict limitation to geodetic aspects; advances in theory made neccssary an increased emphasis on mathematical methods. The outcome is the present book, which is intended to be theoretical in the sense in which the word is used in the term “theoretical physics.” This textbook, intended for graduate students, presupposes the background in mathematics and physics required by geodesy departments of American and European Universities. The necessary fundamentals of potential theory are presented in an introductory chapter. Chapters 1 through 5 cover the material for a basic course in physical geodesy. Chapters 6 through 8 present a number of more specialized and advanced topics, where current research activity is high. (These chapters are likely to be more subjectively biased than the others.) The reader who has mastered them should be able to begin research of his own. For the sake of completeness we have added a chapter on celestial methods; this material may be included in the basic course. We have tried hard to make the book sclf-contained. Detailed derivations are given wherever feasible. Our approach is intuitive: verba! explanations of the principles were felt to be more important than formal mathematical rigor, although the latter is not ignored. Our general attitude is conservative. We do not believe that the concept of the geoid has become obsolete. This docs not mean, however, that we are unaware of the great significance of recent theoretical developments associated mainly with the name of Molodensky: we discuss them in Chapter 8. Observational techniques such as those used in gravity measurements or astronomical observations are deliberately omitted as being out of place in a theoretically oriented presentation. Bibliographies of works cited in the text, many of which should be useful for further study, will be found at the end of each chapter; citation in the text is by author’s name and year of publication—for example, Kellogg (1929). We have not attempted to settle questions of priority. Names associated with formulas should be considered primarily as convenient labels. Similarly, the most readily accessible or most comprehensive publication of an author on a particular topic is given rather than his first. Most of our own research incorporated in this book has been done at The Ohio State University. We wish to thank Dr. Waiter D. Lambert for carefully checking parts of the manuscript for correct English.

Precambrian geology of Finland key to the evolution of the fennoscandian shield /

The Fennoscandian (or Baltic) Shield represents the largest outcropping domain of Precambrian bedrock in Europe, covering more than a million km2 throughout Norway, Sweden, Finland, and northwestern Russia. This book focuses on Finland, which occupies the central part of the shield and which, since the advent of modern geology in the 19th century, has been instrumental in a number of fundamental insights and advances in understanding Earth processes.
