Kola Peninsula. Mineralogical Almanac / Кольский полуостров. Минералогический альманах

This special issue of the Mineralogical Almanac is devoted to the Kola Peninsula. The main article by I.V. Pekov and A.P. Nikolaev is on the mineralogy of peralkaline pegmatites and hydrothermal bodies of the Koashva apatite deposit in Khibiny. The history of its exploration and geology are outlined, the pegmatite-hydrothermal complex is characterized and 127 minerals are described.

An article by A.V. Voloshin is focused on the history of mineralogical studies of the rare-element granite pegmatites of Kolmozero and Voron'i Tundras and the amazonite pegmatites of West Keivy. The paper by Yu.L Voitekhovsky is devoted to almandine and its deposits in West Keivy. A.V. Voloshin, I.V. Pekov and V.V. Borisova give a historical review with statistical data on 264 new minerals first discovered in the Kola region. A special article is devoted to the collection by V.G. Grishin, one of the most interesting modern collections of the Kola minerals.

Magmatic sedimentation and carbonatitic brentiation in kimberlite sills at Benfontein, South Afric

At Benfontein, near Kimberley, South Africa, three sills of kimberlite intrude Dwyka shales and overlying Karroo dolerite. Each sill results from numerous injections of kimberlite that have consolidated to give the sill a layered appearance. Many layers - show magmatic sedimentation features and cumulus textures, and, although some show in situ differentiation, other layers result from pre-injection differentiations The transporting, intercumulus liquid was carbonate-rich and some layers have differentiated to form a carbonate rock composed of the intercumulus calcite; this, on trace element and isotopic data, shows strong affinities with carbonatite. In one of the sills 'one calcite layer has migrated diapirically into overlying layers in.the sill. These sedimentation features, combined with thermal metamorphism of country-rock shales and the presence of quench calcite and apatite, are interpreted as evidence that the kimberlite was injected as a highly mobile fluid, comprising megacrysts of olivine, garnet, pyroxene, mica and picroilmenite in a hot carbonatitic liquid from which olivine, magnetic spinel, perov-skite, apatite, calcite, dolomite, ankerite and quartz crystallised. The evidence that the transportation medium was a warm carbonatitic liquid is directly opposed to earlier hypotheses proposing that kimberlite is intruded as a cold or plastic paste, and also supports proposals of a genetic link between kimberlite and carbonatite.

Manual of mineral science / Руководство по минералогии

In 1848, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., was beginning to shift from being primarily a literary publisher to being a scientific, technical, and engineering publisher. This shift was the first of many Wiley has made over the years as it has constantly adapted to meet the unique needs of each new generation.
This was also the year Wiley published one of its most enduring and notable titles: James D. Dana’s Manual of Mineralogy, including Observations on Mines, Rocks, Reduction of Ores, and the Application of the Science to the Arts. Over the years, it too has continually adapted to meet the changing needs of all who use it. Now in its twenty-third edition, the Manual of Mineral Science remains the standard for teaching introductory mineralogy/mineral science. <...>

Manual of mineralogy

A mineral may be defined as any naturally occurring chemical element or compound formed as a product of inorganic processes. This eliminates all artificial products of the laboratory as well as all natural products formed by organic agencies. The above definition is brief; and, though it embraces most of the substances considered as minerals in this book, it should be considerably expanded to be all-inclusive.

Minerals are the materials of which most of the rocks of the earth's crust consist and are, therefore, among the common objects of daily observation. The great majority of rocks are not made up of single minerals, but are more or less heterogeneous aggregates of several different species. A few rocks, like limestone and quartzite, consist of but one mineral in a more or less pure state. In addition to occurring as essential and integral parts of rocks, minerals are found distributed through them in a scattered way, or in veins and cavities. <...>

Manual of mineralogy

Mineralogy is an integral part of the undergraduate education of geologists and it may also be part of a curriculum in materials science. One or several courses in mineralogy are generally required in a geology or earth science undergraduate program. These courses are meant as prerequisites to upper-level courses in petrology, geochemistry, economic geology, or mineralogy itself.

The Middle Miocene Orduzu volcanic suite, which is a part of the widespread Neogene Yamadag˘ volcanism of Eastern Anatolia, consists of a rhyolitic lava flow, rhyolitic dykes, a trachyandesitic lava flow and basaltic trachyandesitic dykes. Existence of mafic enclaves and globules in some of the volcanic rocks, and microtextures in phenocrysts indicate that magma mingling and mixing between andesitic and basaltic melts played an important role in the evolution of the volcanic suite. Major and trace element characteristics of the volcanic rocks are similar to those formed in convergent margin settings.
