Incluses of Gemstones

In our quest to understand the complete story of gemstones we look internally to fully appreciate their external beauty. We've set up a new gallery to exhibit the educational and fascinating inclusions that aid us in our work. All the gemstones photographed have passed through Pala's hands in the past year. The photos were taken in an effort to learn and appreciate the gems that we see every day.

Incommensurate crystallography /

Translational symmetry is firmly established as the key property characterizing the crystalline state of matter. This is founded in the successes of translational symmetry in explaining physical properties of crystalline compounds and Bragg reflections in their diffraction patterns, as well as in the many substances that possess periodic atomic structures. An alternative and perhaps better characterization of the crystalline state is by long-range order of the atomic structure. The past fifty years have seen a continuous increase of the awareness that long-range order can be achieved differently than by translational symmetry. Modulated crystals and composite crystals have atomic structures that can be described as variations on periodic structures, while quasicrystals differ from crystals with translational symmetry in a more fundamental way. This book presents the methods of structural analysis of incommensurately modulated crystals and incommensurate composite crystals <...>

Indicator mineral methods in mineral exploration /

Indicator minerals are mineral species that, when appearing as transported grains in clastic sediments, indicate the presence in bedrock of a specific type of mineralization, hydrothermal alteration or lithology. Their physical and chemical characteristics, including a relatively high density, facilitate their preservation and identification and allow them to be readily recovered at the parts per billion level from sample media such as till, stream sediments or soil producing large exploration targets.

Industrial minerals and rocks /

This handbook has grown out of the lectures the author has giren at the Faculty of Sciences at Charles University. It takes into consideration the world literature on the subject and the work done by Czech and Slovak economic geologists since the establishment of centralized geological servioe in Czechoslovakia in 1952; these results were published in scientific journals, archive reports, and especially in monographs on the industrial minerals <...>

Industrial minerals and rocks. Commodities, markets and uses /

The vision for the 7th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks is to build on the strengths of the previous editions while adding significant new content to ensure utility and relevance to readers for years to come. The success of previous editions made this book a widely read global reference that serves as one of the most authoritative single sources for timely information on industrial minerals, their uses, and the markets where they find myriad applications.

Infrared spectroscopy of minerals and related compounds /

When using infrared spectroscopy for the study of minerals, researchers often face a number of specific difficulties. This may be due to various factors, including lack of available substance, small sizes of monomineral grains and aggregates, the presence of structural impurities and mechanical inclusions, instability of some minerals, scattering effects, atmospheric disturbance, background noice, anomalous dispersion, interference, etc. One can distinguish three kinds of sources of errors and artifacts in IR spectroscopy of minerals, which are connected with experimental procedures, data proceeding and data interpretation <...>

International tables for crystallography. Volume F. Crystallography of biological macromolecules / Международные таблицы для кристаллографии.

International Tables for Crystallography, Volume F, Crystallography of Biological Macromolecules, was commissioned by the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) in recognition of the extraordinary contributions that knowledge of macromolecular structure has made, and will make, to the analysis of biological systems, from enzyme catalysis to the workings of a whole cell.

International tables for crystallography.

International Tables for Crystallography started life in in 1935 as a two-volume set entitled Internationale Tabellen zur Bestimmung von Kristallstrukturen, with C. Hermann as editor. We are now in the third series, with eight volumes covering all aspects of crystallography from symmetry to macromolecular crystallography. However, there has always been one glaring omission and one that has become increasingly serious: powder diffraction. This is odd: powder crystallography started as early as 1916 with the seminal work of Debye and Scherrer, and has grown to include quantitative and semi-quantitative analysis, structure solution and refinement, two-dimensional data, comprehensive databases, clustering, and microstructural properties, and is applied to a wide range of problems of both academic and industrial interest.

Introduction to Crystallography /

In this very first chapter, I would like to give you an idea of the term “crystal structure.” First of all, we want to get an impression of how large or small crystalline objects can be. For this purpose, take a look at . Fig. 1.1, which is based on the popular short film “Powers of Ten” from 1977 [1]. This short film illustrates in a beautiful way, of which sizes objects are that are subject of scientific investigations. They span an impressive range of orders of magnitude. We do not want to explain all objects in detail, but instead will focus on just a few. <...>
