Minerals and rocks / Минералы и горные породы

The solid part of the Earth is made up of rocks. Rocks are made up of minerals. A mineral is a naturally
occurring inorganic solid. It has a specific chemical composition and a characteristic crystal structure.
Quartz is a very common mineral. Most beach sand is composed of quartz. It has the composition SiO2
and forms elongate 6-sided crystals that terminate at a point <...>

Minerals and Rocks. Volume 10. Meteorites. Classification and properties / Минералы и породы. Выпуск 10. Метеориты. Классификация и свойства

The solar system consists of the sun, nine planets, 32 known satellites  (and a ring system), several thousand telescopically visible asteroids,  > 105 comets, meteoroids (see Glossary), interplanetary dust, and a  tenuous and transitory plasma (the solar wind). A primary purpose of  meteorite research is to learn more about the origin and evolution of the  solar system.

Minerals as advanced materials / Минералы как передовые материалы

This book contains chapters presented at the International workshop ‘Minerals as Advanced Materials I’ that was held in the hotel of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the Imandra lake, Kola peninsula, one of the most beautiful places of the Russian North, during 8–12 July, 2007. The idea of the workshop originated from the necessity of interactions between mineralogy and material science, including all aspects of both these disciplines. Many important materials that dominate modern technological development were known to mineralogists for hundreds years, though their properties were not fully recognized. Mineralogy, on the other hand, needs new impacts for the further development in the line of modern scientific achievements, including novel insights provided by development of bio- and nanotechnologies as well as by the understanding of a deep role that information plays in the formation of natural structures and definition of natural processes. <...>

Minerals first discovered on the territory of the former Soviet Union.

In this book, information about the type localities and the history of the discoveries of all new minerals found on the territory of the former Soviet Union (582 mineral species, from 1766 to 1997) is availablefor the first time. The book also contains information on the type specimens of the minerals that are kept in Russian museums; data on the persons for whom the minerals were named; portraits of discoverers of new minerals; 146 colour photographs and 68 SEM-photographs of minerals; 24 geographical schemes and 38 colour pictures showing the type localities; a complete index of place names; and 761 references. The book is intended for mineralogists, museum curators, specialists in the history of geology, and mineral collectors.

Minerals in Britain. Past production... Future potential. Gemstones / Полезные ископаемые в Великобритании. Добыча в прошлом... Потенциал в будущем. Драгоценные камни

Although Britain is a major gemstone trader, it currently produces little from indigenous sources. There are, however, records of a wide variety of gem material, particularly in Scotland. In addition to sapphire, ruby and possible diamond, the country has yielded topaz, beryl, and many varieties of semi-precious stones including cairngorm, amethyst, garnet, tourmaline, agate, zircon, ‘Blue John’ flourite and jet. There is also an unconfirmed report of Scottish emerald. Most of these gemstones were found by amateur geologists and gemmologists but recent discoveries, particularly of iamond indicator minerals in Scandinavia and Ireland, have raised commercial interest in the potential of Britain as a source of precious stones. <...>0

Minerals of the Carpathians / Минералы Карпат

Geologically, the Carpathian Range is the continuation of the Eastern Alps towards the East forming an arching bow-shaped mountain chain of 1,500 km in length that extends through several countries, (i.e. the Czech Republic. Slovakia, Poland. Hungary, Ukraine, and Romania). From a mineralogical viewpoint, the Carpathians, with its more than 1,000 mineral species, is an extremely interesting area. Its geological formations vary in ages and compositions. The structural evolution is highly complicated. It has also been a traditional mining area since prehistoric times. More than fifty valid mineral species were first described from this region (karpatite. koktaite, libethenite, native tellurium, pilsenite, rozenite. rhodochrosite.  etc.). Some very rare species, originally discovered in other parts of the world, also occur here (cymrite, hetaerolite. nambulite, segnitite, capgaronnite, etc.). <...>

Minerals, inclusions and volcanic processes / Вулканические минералы, включения и процессы

Minerals are intrinsically resistant to the processes that homogenize silicate liquids—their compositions thus yield an archive of volcanic and magmatic processes that are invisible at the whole rock scale. Minerals and their inclusions record diverse magma compositions, the depths and temperatures of magma storage, the nature of open system processes, and the rates at which magmas ascend.

Minerals, rocks and fossils / Минералы, горные породы и ископаемые остатки

This field guide is divided into three sections, namely minerals, rocks (including meteorites and tektites) and fossils. Each section comprises an introductory part, which is illustrated by line drawings, and a descriptive part, which is illustrated by line drawings and colour photographs. The introductory sections include the minimum basic information required to follow the descriptive sections adequately, while the descriptive sections, for ease of reference, are always arranged so that photographs and accompanying text are opposite one another.
