Gemmology / Геммология

The science of gemmology is concerned with the study of the technical aspects of gemstones and gem materials and the use of these aspects for identification purposes. For well over 2000 years, philosophers and scientists have been captivated by the beauty and the enigma of gems, and down the years have left records of their observations on these ornamental products of nature. One of the first gemstone books in English was written by Thomas Nichols as long ago as 1652*, but it was only in the last half of the nineteenth century that the science of gemmology began to emerge as a specialized offshoot of an already well-established branch of science, mineralogy. <...>

Genesis of diamonds and associated phases / Генезис алмазов и связанных с ними фаз

Crystal growth of diamonds at the Earth’s mantle depths of 150–800 km had been accompanied by a fragmentary capturing minerals, melts and volatile compounds (as diamond-hosted inclusions) from the parental melts. This indicates convincingly that diamonds were originated jointly with the phases of primary hermetic inclusions in a common parental medium. This opens up possibilities for evaluating the general chemistry of natural diamond-producing systems from the compositions of significantly different phases associated with diamonds in primary inclusions. Of particular value is that it has been made possible to determine the boundary compositions for the experimental systems which duplicate the natural ones responsible for genesis of diamonds and associated phases. As a consequence, the principal problems of diamond genetic mineralogy may be formulated. It became apparent, that the methodology of physico-chemical experiments is of crucial importance in solution of the genetic problems for diamonds and associated phases. <...>

Geochemistry and mineralogy of rare earth elements / Геохимия и минералогия редкоземельных элементов

The authors of this volume presented a short course on the rare earth elements to about 80 participants in San Francisco, California, December 1-3, 1989, just prior to the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union. This was the nineteenth in a series of short courses that the Mineralogical Society of America (MSA) began sponsoring in 1974. It was the brain-child of Robert Hazen and David Stewart, and the latter was the agent who recruited Bruce Lipin (and later, Gordon McKay) to undertake this monumental work. This book joins a long list of Reviews in Mineralogy (see opposite page for details) that MSA has made available to the scientific community at reasonable cost. The editors and authors thank Mrs. Marianne Stern and Mrs. Margie Sentelle at Virginia Tech for their tireless efforts (under considerable pressure) in preparation of camera-ready copy for this volume. We also thank Mr. Todd N. Solberg for helping with word-processing problems on the computer. <...>

Geology and mineralogy of gemstones / Геология и минералогия драгоценных камней

Earth Science departments at universities across North America are diversifying their academic offerings for entry level science courses. Among topics that are catching on are the mineralogy and geology of gem materials. This textbook aims to support these courses. At the same time, the geological settings that give rise to gemstone deposits are as unique and fascinating as those for precious and base metal deposits.

Geology, mineralogy and crystallography: Being a theoretical, practical an descriptibe item of inorganic nature. The form and classificatin of crystals, and a chemical arrangement of minerals / Геология, минералогия и кристаллография

The following pages are intended to supply the student with a comprehensive account of the present condition and probable early history of the external crust of the earth, an elementary treatise on the science of Crystallography, and a systematic arrangement and description of the various Minerals found in nature.

The author of the treatise on Geology has already published both elementary and practical works on the subject; and to one of these he feels it right to refer, as it may seem not dissimilar to the present treatise in plan and treatment. The work alluded to (“ Elementary Course of Geology, Mineralogy, and Physical Geography,” London, 1850) is, however, in reality very unlike this, and adapted for a different purpose. It may either succeed or accompany this volume in the hands of the student, but cannot be substituted for it, being more technical, and in greater detail in the departments of Physical Geography and Descriptive Geology ; while the Geological portion of the following pages will be found to abound in generalization,—theoretical, descriptive, and practical. As an instance, the Author may mention the distinct treatise on the application of Geological Knowledge to the Art of Landscape Painting, which forms a prominent part of the division entitled “Practical Geology:' The novelty of this subject, its great interest, and a due consideration of the many ways in which the observations of the Artist and the Geologist run parallel, form an ample apology for its insertion; and the mode in which the subject was received by the profession (when it formed the substance of a series of Lectures delivered a few years ago at the Suffolk Street Gallery, before the Society of British Artists) has induced the Author to bring it forward on the present occasion. <...>

Geology. Landforms, minerals and rocks. Minerals / Геология. Формы рельефа, минералы и горные породы. Минералы

If rock can be thought of as the foundation upon which all life on Earth stands, minerals are the foundation upon which rocks are built. Essentially, minerals are the most simple chemical compounds that make up rocks. This book is designed to take the reader on a tour of the various mineral groups, the unique characteristics that set one mineral apart from another, the features different groups of minerals share, and the roles minerals play in the rocks themselves.

Handbook of mineralogy / Справочник по минералогии

The Handbook of Mineralogy series is a Five Volume set authored by John W. Anthony, Richard A.  Bideaux, Kenneth W. Bladh, and Monte C. Nichols, and published by Mineral Data Publishing. Each  mineral known at the time of publication occupies one page of the handbook.
In 2001 the copyright for the Handbook of Mineralogy was given to the Mineralogical Society of  America by Kenneth W. Bladh, Richard A. Bideaux, Elizabeth Anthony-Morton and Barbara G.  Nichols and the remaining volumes were shipped to the MSA warehouse in Chantilly, VA.
Along with the copyright, MSA was given pdf files of each page of the handbook. These are freely  distributed to the public on this website.

Hardness estimation of minerals, rocks and ceramic materials / Определение твердости минералов, горных пород и керамических материалов

The mechanical properties of minerals constitute a very little investigated field of study compared with other areas of mineral physics. The minerals for w hich all crystallomechanical parameters are known are few, and until now it has not been possible to state unequivocally whether one mechanical property alone could be adequately used in defining most minerals. For this reason, it is essential that the mechanical properties and deformations of minerals be investigated, treating mineral crystallomechanics as a section of mineralogy of importance equal to crystallo-optics and crystallochem-istry. for example. <...>

High-pressure crystallography. From fundamental phenomena to technological applications / Кристаллография высоких давлений. От фундаментальных явлений к технологическим приложениям

This volume is a collection of lectures presented during the 2009 International School on High-pressure Crystallography, which took place at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture, between June 4 and 14, 2009, in the very picturesque Sicilian town of Erice. The 2009 school was the 41st course of the “International School of Crystallography” organized at the Majorana Center and was directed by Elena Boldyreva (Novosibirsk University) and Przemyslaw Dera (University of Chicago). Unmatched support and excellent on-site organization was provided by the expert team consisting of Prof. Paola Spadon (Uniersity of Padova), Prof. Lodovico Riva di San Severino (University of Bologna), Elena Papinutto and Prof. John Irvin (University of California, San Franciso), aided by great team of young local organizers (“orange scarfs”). <...>

High-temperature crystal chemistry / Кристаллохимия высоких температур и давлений

The art and science of crystal chemistry lies in the interpretation of threedimensional electron and nuclear density data from diffraction experiments in terms of interatomic bonding and forces. With the exception of meticulous high-resolution studies (e.g. Downs 1983, Downs et al. 1985, Zuo et al. 1999), these density data reveal little more than the possible atomic species and their distributions within the unit cell. Other parameterizations of crystal structures, including atomic radii, bond distances, packing indices, polyhedral representations, and distortion indices, are model-dependent. These secondary parameters have proven essential to understanding structural systematics, but they are all based on interpretations of the primary diffraction data. <...>
