Fundamentals of clay mineral crystal structure and physicochemical properties / Основы кристаллической структуры и физико-химических свойств глинистых минералов

The word “clays” was assigned early to fine grained material in geological formations (Agricola 1546) or soils (de Serres 1600). Clays have been identified as mineral species in the begining of the 19th century in the production of ceramic materials (Brongniart 1844). Then Ebelmen (1847) carefully analyzed the decomposition of rocks under chemical attack and the way that porcelain can be commonly made. Since this pionner works, the definition of clays has varied.

Fundamentals of earthquake prediction / Основы предсказания землетрясений

Seismology has been defined as “the science based on data called seismograms” (Aki and Richards, 1980). The definition misses the urgency of human suffering caused by the complex phenomena called earthquakes. It also tends to restrict membership of our club to people who know their way around seismograms, rather than to those who make use of other kinds of input such as theoretical physics, fault displacements, or time series of seismic events. Actually seismograms tell us far less about earthquakes than we need to know. They are like unreliable couriers sent abroad with a long complicated message: By the time they get to their destination they tell us all about the incidents along the way but the original message has been forgotten.<...>

Fundamentals of geology / Основы геологии

The reader probably is acquainted with some books of the series: Physics for Everybody, Chemistry for Everybody, Mechanics for Everybody, Algebra for Everybody, Geometry for Everybody and Arithmetic for Everybody. In the form of short stories, these books write of the interesting processes and phenomena that take place in nature, and describe unique mechanisms; they answer riddles in mathematics, physics, chemistry and mechanics, put posers, and explain the fundamentals of some sciences in a simple and entertaining manner. Academician A. E. Fersman in his Mineralogy for Everyone, which has had a run of several editions, has shown that this seemingly dry subject, with its enumerations of minerals, their forms, properties and occurrence, is quite fascinating. He has made rocks come alive and has told of their varied uses in everyday life and in technology. The author transports his readers to mountains, quarries and mines, to a fairyland of minerals and crystals. <...>

Fundamentals of geophysics / Основы геофизики

In the ten years that have passed since the publication of the first edition of this textbook exciting advances have taken place in every discipline of geophysics. Computer-based improvements in technology have led the way, allowing more sophistication in the acquisition and processing of geophysical data. Advances in mass spectrometry have made it possible to analyze minute samples of matter in exquisite detail and have contributed to an improved understanding of the origin of our planet and the evolution of the solar system. Space research has led to better

Fundamentals of geostatistics in five lessons / Основы геостатистики в пяти уроках

From its inception as a separate discipline, geostatis tics sought recognition from practitioners, not from math ematicians or physicists. and rightfully so. Indeed, the theory was essentially established by the 1950's by Kol mogorov and Wiener and exposed by Matern (1960), Whit tle (1963), and Matheron (1965), among others. But there is a long, hard way between a concept expressed by matrix notations in a Hilbert space and its implementation and routine application. It is my opinion that the main con tribution of geostatistics has been and still is implementa. tion, an essential follow-up step much too often forsaken by theoreticians. <...>

Fundamentals of invertebrate palaeontology. Macrofossils / Основы палеонтологии беспозвоночных. Макрофоссилии

The idea of this brief chapter is to introduce students to the concept of fossil occurrences and their use, through geological time. An approach that defines the geological time scale, a method of relating the timing and relationship between events that have occurred during Earth’s history. The Geologic time is divisible into four Eons, Hadean, Archean, Proterozoic, and Phanerozoic (Fig. 1.1). The Eons are further divided into Eras; the Phanerozoic is divided into Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic (Fig. 1.1). The Eras are based on major changes in fossils record (such as extinction and origination; the latter is the appearance of new forms). The Eras are further divided into smaller units called Periods, in which a single type of rock system is formed; these are further divided into Epochs like the Paleogene is divisible into Paleocene, Eocene, and Oligocene (Fig. 1.1). However, in spite of a long impressive fossil record, it is also interrupted by major and minor extinction events (Fig. 1.1; see also Hart 1996; Hallam and Wignall 1997; Koeberl and MacLeod 2002; Taylor 2009). The Phanerozoic record of marine invertebrates, in particular, is interrupted by numerous, geologically short-term intervals (generally <3 Ma) during which biotic diversity and abundance declined significantly (<40 % at the familial level and <63 % at the generic level) (Raup and Sepkoski 1986) (see Fig. 1.1). Extinctions (major and minor) do not fall within the preview of this book but have only been mentioned to allude to the interruptions within the fossil record. <...>

Fundamentals of invertebrate palaeontology. Microfossils / Основы палеонтологии беспозвоночных. Микрофоссилии

The Fundamentals of Invertebrate Palaeontology (Microfossils) is a follow-up of my earlier book, Fundamentals of Invertebrate Palaeontology (Macrofossils), and like the latter, the present book does not deal with the basic principles or classification (the latter is mentioned only in brief). This book primarily deals in detailing up-to-date morphological characteristics of the studied organism and hence is intended for undergraduate students or for early researchers. <...>

Fundamentals of Ocean Acoustics / Основы акустики океана

This is the third edition of our book Fundamentals of Ocean Acoustics, revised and supplemented, including much new material responding to the progress in the theory of sound propagation and scattering in the ocean over the last 10 years. New topics are devoted mainly to such questions as the intrathermoclinc lenses and their effect on sound fields in the ocean, weakly divergent bundles of rays, ocean acoustic tomography, coupled modes, invariants of an interference pattern in a range-dependent oceanic waveguide, sound scattering by random highly anisotropic volume inhomogeneities (fluctuations of the refractive index of the sea medium) with a fractal spectrum, fractal nature of low-frequency attenuation in the underwater sound channel, small-slope approximation in treating sound scattering from the rough sea surface (Voronovich's approach), sound scattering by an air bubble near the sea surface, collective bubble behaviour, etc. Both the direct and inverse problems arc considered. Some rccent experimental data arc also added. More than 60 new references are presented. Some new references and figures arc preceded by the letter A.The book is intended for experts in acoustics and oceanology, engineers, postgraduates, and students of universities and institutes of geophysical and hydrometeorological profiles. Thus, it can be used as a scientific monograph and textbook of advanced type. The authors arc grateful to T.l. Tsyplakova for her great help in preparing the manuscript.

Fundamentals of physical geography / Основы физической географии

Our natural, environmental home on planet Earth is a complex system of interacting components that includes climate and the atmosphere, organisms and their communities, water, landforms, and soils. The ways we choose to use and affect the environment today can benefit or endanger our own as well as future generations. More than ever before, people today want and need to know the effects of their actions on the environment at both a local and global scale.
