The Gas Processors Suppliers Association is an organization of companies with specialized knowledge of the supply and service needs of the gas processing and related industries. A major service to them is embodied in the Engineering Data Book, which was first published in 1935. Over 150,000 copies of the Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Editions of the book were distributed for use throughout the world by engineers, operating personnel, and students. The Twelfth Edition of the Engineering Data Book, available in two versions — FPS and SI — is an attempt to assemble, in a single compilation, basic design information together with data and procedures that can be used by field and plant engineers to determine operating and design parameters. The term “geochemistry” was first used by the German-Swiss chemist Christian Friedrich Schönbein* in 1838. You might guess, merely from the etymology of the word, that the field of geochemistry is somehow a marriage of the fields of geology and chemistry. That would be a good guess. But just how are chemistry and geology combined within geochemistry; what is the relationship between them? Perhaps the best explanation would be to state that in geochemistry, we use the tools of chemistry to solve geological problems; that is, we use chemistry to understand the Earth and how it works.

The science of gemmology is concerned with the study of the technical aspects of gemstones and gem materials and the use of these aspects for identification purposes. For well over 2000 years, philosophers and scientists have been captivated by the beauty and the enigma of gems, and down the years have left records of their observations on these ornamental products of nature. One of the first gemstone books in English was written by Thomas Nichols as long ago as 1652*, but it was only in the last half of the nineteenth century that the science of gemmology began to emerge as a specialized offshoot of an already well-established branch of science, mineralogy. <...>
Crystal growth of diamonds at the Earth’s mantle depths of 150–800 km had been accompanied by a fragmentary capturing minerals, melts and volatile compounds (as diamond-hosted inclusions) from the parental melts. This indicates convincingly that diamonds were originated jointly with the phases of primary hermetic inclusions in a common parental medium. This opens up possibilities for evaluating the general chemistry of natural diamond-producing systems from the compositions of significantly different phases associated with diamonds in primary inclusions. Of particular value is that it has been made possible to determine the boundary compositions for the experimental systems which duplicate the natural ones responsible for genesis of diamonds and associated phases. Of all of the sciences utilized in modern archaeological research, that of geology has the longest history of association with archaeology. Surprisingly, perhaps, geoarchaeology as a recognized sub-discipline has taken slightly longer to establish itself than others such as bioarchaeology. There is still some uncertainty about what exactly geoarchaeology encompasses, and some differences of usage of the term between Europe and North America. This brief introduction explores some of these issues, and attempts to place the other contributions to this volume in a slightly broader context.
