Open pit mine planning and design / Планирование и проектирование открытых горных работ

One of the first things discussed in an Introduction to Mining course and one which students must commit to memory is the definition of ‘ore’. One of the more common definitions (USBM, 1967) is given below:
Ore: A metalliferous mineral, or an aggregate of metalliferous minerals, more or less mixed with gangue which from the standpoint of the miner can be mined at a profit or, from the standpoint of a metallurgist can be treated at a profit.

Open pit problems in engineering practice / Проблемы открытых карьеров в инженерной практике

This paper describes some mitigation/remedial measures used in Chilean open pit engineering practice to deal with some common pit slope problems. These measures include the use of controlled blasting techniques, slope depressurization and pit dewatering, use of retaining dikes, buttresses and removal of material in unstable slopes, and the filling of pre-existing underground excavations and surface craters.  <...>

Open-pit mine production scheduling under grade uncertainty / Планирование добычи на открытых рудниках в условиях неопределенности качества

Common challenges associated with grade uncertainty involve failing to meet decisive operational targets, which include (among others) the following: ore tonnage sent to the mill, total metal processed at the mill, blending requirements on ore feed, total waste tonnage mined, maximum allowable proportion of potentially deleterious materials (e.g., toxic elements such as arsenic). These challenges reflect, to an important extent, the uncertainty involved in defining precisely the mineral grades in an ore deposit. <...>

Ophiolites in Earth history / Офиолиты в истории Земли

This book is derived from the interdisciplinary, contemporary work of the international ophiolite community in a most up-to-date treatment of process-oriented problems and questions on the generation and evolution of ophiolites. It is a large collection of research papers from a wide range of international contributors. Some of these papers were presented in thematic ophiolite sessions at the 2001 Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America (Boston) and the 2001 Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (San Francisco). The 32 papers here examine the mode and nature of igneous, metamorphic, tectonic, sedimentological, and biological processes associated with the evolution of oceanic crust in different tectonic settings in Earth history as revealed in various ophiolites and ophiolite belts around the world, and the geodynamic significance of these ophiolites in the evolution of different orogenic systems. Divided into six thematic sections, the book presents a wealth of new data and syntheses from mainly Phanerozoic ophiolites around the world <...>

Optical mineralogy / Оптическая минералогия

Austin F. Rogers, the senior author of the first two editions of this text and professor emeritus in mineralogy at Stanford University, passed away at Berkeley, California, in April, 1957. His wise counsel as a former professor and his judgment as a mineralogist have been greatly missed during this revision. On the other hand, many readers, particularly those most familiar with Professor Rogers and his work, will recognize the influence of his teaching and will remember portions of the text which remain unchanged in the third edition.

Optical mineralogy. Principles & practice. A practical introduction to optical mineralogy / Оптическая минералогия. Принципы и практика. Практическое введение в оптическую минералогию

Microscopy is a servant of all the sciences, and the microscopic examination of minerals is an important technique which should be mastered by all students of geology early in their careers. Advanced modern textbooks on both optics and mineralogy are available, and our intention is not that this new textbook should replace these but that it should serve as an introductory text or a first stepping-stone to the study of optical mineralogy. The present text has been written with full awareness that it will probably be used as a laboratory handbook, serving as a quick reference to the properties of minerals, but nevertheless care has been taken to present a systematic explanation of the use of the microscope as well as theoretical aspects of optical mineralogy. The book is therefore suitable for the novice either studying as an individual or participating in classwork. <...>

Optically anomalous crystals / Оптические аномалии в кристаллах

The most striking features of crystals are their symmetric, polyhedral forms. Federov said that crystals “flash-forth their symmetry” (Shubnikov and Kopstik, 1974), a strong allusion to the sharp, highly reflecting surfaces of well-formed crystals prized by enthusiasts. We learned from Häuy that the shapes of crystals reflect the arrangements of the particles from which they are constructed. Today, these arrangements are routinely deduced from x-ray diffraction patterns. In the 19th Century, prior to the discovery of x-rays, the perturbations to the state of visible light traversing a crystal were used to assay symmetry.

Ideally, the symmetry of a crystal that an investigator would deduce from shape, from the transmission of visible light, from the scattering of x-rays, or from any other method, should be the same. However, as early as 1818, David Brewster in Edinburgh first noticed that some crystals appeared to have lower optical symmetries than morphological symmetries (Brewster, 1818b). <...>

Optimisation of the grade control procedures at the Yandi iron-ore mine, Western Australia: geostatistical approach / Оптимизация процедур контроля качества на железорудном руднике Янди, Западная Австралия: геостатистический подход

Effectiveness of ore grade control at operating mines depends on both the quality and quantity of the samples used. Therefore, optimisation of grade control procedures requires analysis of sample quality and their spatial distribution. This approach, implying quantitative estimation of both these factors and quantification of their contribution to the grade control errors, was used for comparing two different grade control procedures at the Yandicoogina (Yandi) iron-ore open pit mine, located in the eastern part of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. At Yandi, pisolitic iron oxide mineralisation is distributed within a meandering palaeoriver channel, characterised by abundant clay pods that contain the deleterious components; in particular Al2O3 and SiO2.
