The quaternary of the United States. A review volume for the VII congress of the international association for quaternary research / Четвертичный период США. Материалы 7-го конгресса международного совещания по проблемам исследования четвертичного периода

The quaternary of the United States THE QUATERNARY PERIOD of geologic time encompasses the last ice age proper (Pleistocene Epoch) and subsequent time (Holocene or Recent Epoch). The Quaternary is unique among the geologic periods for the relative perfection of its stratigraphic record—and thus for the unmatched opportunity it affords to decipher historical details with an accuracy impossible for earlier periods. The framework of the continents even in early-Quaternary time resembled that of the present so closely that major relations of land and sea and their effects on the general circulation of the atmosphere were probably very like those of the present, except perhaps when world-wide lowering of sea level exposed continental shelves or created significant land bridges between continents and arctic islands. Reconstructions of past conditions therefore may be controlled by a geographic framework relatively easy to visualize. <...>

The race for resources. Continuing struggles over minerals and fuels / Борьба за ресурсы. Продолжающаяся борьба за полезные ископаемые и топливо

Not long ago Business Week, in a feature story entitled “Now the Squeeze on Metals,” warned ominously: America's industrial might—already threatened by the deepening energy mess—is in for another resource crunch. . . . All signs point to longer-range problems in U.S. mineral supply that will not be solved by cyclic swings in the economy. If not solved, those problems could make U.S. business less competitive, lower America’s standard of living, and endanger the national security.

The relations between false gold anomalies, sedimentological processes and landslides in Harris Creek, British Columbia, Canada

Harris Creek is a Au-rich, cobble-gravel bed stream in southern British Columbia, Canada. A preliminary study, based on analysis of < 0.053 mm sediments and heavy mineral concentrates (SG > 3.2) from bulk sediment samples, identified accumulations of Au at breaks-in-slope of the stream gradient. This is consistent with theoretical models of heavy mineral transport by streams (Day and Fletcher, 1991). However, the breaks-in-slope also coincide with active landslides that might, because of the form of the Au anomalies, be interpreted as the source of the Au. To investigate this we have: (1) monitored erosion of the landslides and determined their Au content; and (2) used multi-element geochemistry (with Al, Mg, Na, Ba, Ti, P and Sr) to fingerprint the influence of one of the landslides on the composition of the < 0.053 mm fraction of the stream sediments.

The Relief Canyon gold deposit, Nevada: a mineralized solution breccia

The Relief Canyon gold deposit in the Humboldt Range of western Nevada is a low-grade, high-tonnage orebody of Tertiary or younger age. The host rocks include limestones of the Triassic Cane Spring Formation, which are overlain by shales of the Triassic Grass Valley Formation. The rocks were folded and metamorphosed to greenschist grade during Jurassic and Cretaceous regional tectonic activity. Mesozoic thrusting may have occurred along the shale-limestone contact, but evidence has been obscured by later hydrothermal activity. The sedimentary rocks were nominally offset along several Late Tertiary normal faults related to uplift of the range.

The rise and reign of the mammals / Расцвет и господство млекопитающих

For the first time in years, the sun broke through the darkness. There was still a whiff of smoke wafting from the gray clouds, which blanketed the ground in shadow. Down below, the land was wrecked. It was all dirt and mud, a wasteland absent any greenery or color whatsoever. Silence hung in the wind, punctured only by the churn of a river, its currents clogged with sticks and stones and the residue of decay. <...>

The rise of amphibians. 365 million years of evolution / Расцвет амфибий. 365 миллионов лет эволюции

Modern amphibians - the familiar frogs and salamanders of the Northern Hemisphere and the less well-known, elongate, and limbless caecilians of the Southern Hemisphere-appear as relatively minor components of the living fauna, although they actually outnumber the dominant mammals in terms of both numbers of species and individuals. In fact, the three modern amphibian groups are but relicts of a much larger radiation that occurred between 370 and 270 million years ago, when their ancestors dominated terrestrial and shallow water environments throughout the world. Of even greater significance, the early amphibians provided an evolutionary link between archaic fish and the ancestors of all more advanced terrestrial vertebrates: the reptiles, birds, and mammals. That is, they were our own <...>

The rise of birds. 225 million years of evolution / Расцвет птиц. 225 миллионов лет эволюции

Endowed with colorful plumages and beautiful songs, birds in flight symbolize spirits released from the bondage of gravity. From the day that humans first looked up at the skies, birds have summoned a sense of wonder and mystery, enchanting our earthbound ancestors with their freedom and song. They fly where they please and when they please. The power of flight has opened up to birds a multilayered network of aerial highways and byways, enabling them to reach any place on our planet. They exhibit a wide variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and habits.

The rise of fishes. 500 million years of evolution / Расцвет рыб. 500 миллионов лет эволюции

The story of fishes through time is also the story of changing continents and climates, devastating mass extinctions and changing faunas and floras. The complete picture can be grasped only from a multifaceted approach, and this is why there are several sections here giving extra information for nonpalaeontologists. A glossary of complex or scientific terms is included in the back for ready reference. <...>

The rise of global corporate social responsibility. Mining and the spread of global norms / Рост глобальной корпоративной социальной ответственности. Добыча полезных ископаемых и распространение глобальных норм

Over the past two decades, private companies have made increasing efforts at the global level to promote corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the environmental, labor, and human rights realms. This book traces private sector initiatives at the global, or international, level to promote social and environmental standards applicable to the mining sector.
