Where on Earth? Dinosaurs and other prehistoric life / Где на Земле?

My adventures as a paleontologist have taken me to many exciting places at home, in the UK, and abroad, and led to the discovery of new species. Working with teams of colleagues, I named the new dinosaurs Eotyrannus, Xenoposeidon, and Mirischia, and the pterosaurs Vectidraco and Eurazhdarcho. One of the things that interests me most about dinosaurs, giant marine reptiles, and other ancient animals is that every one of them has a unique history, just as animals do today.

Who owns the Moon? Extraterrestrial aspects of land and mineral resources ownership /

This work investigates the permissibility and viability of property rights on the celestial bodies, particularly the extraterrestrial aspects of land and mineral resources ownership. In lay terms, it aims to find an answer to the question “Who owns the Moon?”

Whole Earth geophysics. An introductory textbook for geologista and geophysicists /

Whole Earth Geophysics illustrates how different types of geophysical observations provide constraints on Earth’s gross structure and composition. It introduces geology students with a basic grounding in math and physics to the fundamentals of various geophysical techniques, but does not stop there. Specific observations illustrate how each technique constrains certain aspects of the plate tectonic framework that is fundamental to the study of Earth science today.
This book is designed for a Solid Earth Geophysics course at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level. While the primary objective is to illustrate the utility of geophysical observations to geology students, geophysics students may benefit from the book by seeing the basics of their discipline in the context of geology. <...>

Why geology matters. Decoding the past, anticipating the future /

In 1969, when I was a student in California, there was a rash of predictions from astrologers, clairvoyants, and evangelists that there would be a devastating earthquake and the entire state—or at least a large part of it—would fall into the ocean. The seers claimed this would happen during April, although they were not in agreement about the precise date.

Why, and how, we should use compositional data analysis. A step-by-step guide for the field geologists / Почему и как мы должны использовать композиционный анализ данных.

Compositional data arise naturally in several branches of science, including geology. In geochemistry, for example, these constrained data seem to occur typically, when one normalizes raw data or when one obtains the output from a constrained estimation procedure, such as parts per one, percentages, ppm, ppb, molar concentRations, etc.

Wills' mineral processing technology. An introduction to the practical aspects of ore treatment and mineral recovery / Технология обогащения полезных ископаемых Уиллса.

The forms in which metals are found in the crust of the earth and as seabed deposits depend on their reactivity with their environment, particularly with oxygen, sulfur, and carbon dioxide. Gold and platinum metals are found principally in the native or metallic form. Silver, copper, and mercury are found native as well as in the form of sulfides, carbonates, and chlorides.

Wills' mineral processing technology. An introduction to the practical aspects of ore treatment and mineral recovery / Технология обогащения полезных ископаемых Уиллса.

Although mining is a conservative industry, economic drivers continue to encourage innovation and technological change. In mineral processing, equipment vendors, researchers and the operations themselves work to develop technologies that are more efficient, of lower cost and more sustainable than their predecessors. The results are apparent in new equipment and new operating practice. Any textbook needs to reflect these changes, and Barry Wills' classic is no exception.

Wonderful life. Burgess shale and the nature of history /

Not since the Lord himself showed his stuff to Ezekiel in the valley of dry bones had anyone brought such grace and skill to the reconstruction of animals from disarticulated skeletons. Charles R. Knight, most celebrated of artists in the reanimation of fossils, painted all the canonical figures of dinosaurs that fire our fear and imagination to this day. In February 1942, Knight designed a chronological series of panoramas, depicting the history of life from the advent of multicellular animals to the triumph of Homo sapiens, for the National Geographic. (This is the one issue that’s always saved and therefore always missing when you see a “complete” run of the magazine on sale for two bits an issue on the back shelves of the general store in Bucolia, Maine.) He based his first painting in the series—shown on the jacket of this book—on the animals of the Burgess Shale. <...>
