Directional drilling - advanced trajectory modelling / Направленное бурение - расширенное моделирование траектории

Drilling operations are a significant cost in the process of recovering hydrocarbons. The operations are advanced and associated with large HSE and financial risks. The main objectives in a successful drilling operation are to construct safe and economically efficient wells, but the success also depends on hitting the target. As the drilling operation has very high standards of execution, a good drilling operation depends on a good well plan.

The planning phase is a large and complex process as it engineers all aspects of a drilling operation. This is key to create safe and economically efficient wells. Well trajectory planning is a mixture of many parameters but in the end it comes down to identifying the most optimum well path. That means they should be based on exact mathematical calculation models, to precisely calculate well bore trajectories. The industry uses a number of different planning tools that makes it possible to calculate and plan complex well path trajectories. Very few studies have addressed this topic in a systematic manner.

Directional shear strength models in 2D and 3D limit equilibrium analyses to assess the stability of anisotropic rock slopes in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia / Модели прочности на сдвиг в двухмерном и трехмерном измерениях для оценки устойчивост

Модели прочности на сдвиг в двухмерном и трехмерном измерениях для оценки устойчивости анизотропных горных склонов в регионе Пилбара в Западной Австралии.

The bedded iron ore and gold deposits in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia are hosted in highly anisotropic rock masses. For iron ore, these comprise strong banded iron formations discretely interbedded with very weak shales. Gold and other precious metals deposits in the same region are hosted by interbedded siltstones, sandstone and quartzites. Slope instability mechanisms generally involve sliding along bedding planes combined with joints or faults acting as release planes.

Discovering fossil fishes / Поиски ископаемых рыб

F.ishes have a unique evolutionary" history that stretches back in time more than 450 million yrears. They are incredibly ancient, older than the dinosaurs, and include the ancestors of all the limbed vertebrates living on land, even humans. Human evolution is rooted in fishes; and scientists have discovered traces of 360-million-ycar-old fossils of transitional aquatic creatures that had both gills and limbs.

Discovering the unique geology of the Bergell Alps / Знакомство с уникальной геологией Бергельских Альп

The Bergell Alps offer not only a magnificent landscape with impressive mountains that attract many tourists, but also they document a unique geological history, first explored by Bernhard Studer (1851) and since then studied and documented in many publications. In this book, we try to connect visitors with scientific curiosity with remarkable geological features observed in the Bergell Alps, such as a young granite that intrudes into an older stack of nappes (thrust sheets) that represent the European continental plate at the base overthrust by the African plate, causing gradients in temperature and pressure that can be explored by looking at outcrops of rocks in the field.

Discovery of the Cadia Ridgeway gold-copper porphyry deposit / Открытие золото-медно-порфирового месторождения Кадия Риджуэй

The Cadia Ridgeway deposit is one of a group of porphyry-style deposits discovered since 1992 by Newcrest geologists at Cadia 20 kms south of Orange in the central tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. The Ridgeway deposit lies 500m below the surface, 3 kms north-west of the Cadia Hill open cut mine, and was discovered in November 1996. It is notably rich in Au with an inferred and indicated resource of 44 Mt at 2.6 g/t Au and 0.82% Cu, and is under development as an underground mining operation. <...>

Discovery, geology, and origin of the Fruta Del Norte epithermal gold-silver deposit, Southeastern Ecuador / Открытие, геология и происхождение эпитермального золото-серебряного месторождения Фрута-дель-Норте на юго-востоке Эквадора

Fruta del Norte is a completely concealed and extraordinarily well preserved epithermal gold-silver deposit located in the remote Cordillera del Cóndor mountain ranges of southeastern Ecuador. Currently defined resources in a single, steep, relatively small body, displaying exceptional grade continuity, contain 9.81 million ounces (Moz) of gold and 15.0 Moz of silver, with an indicated resource grade of 9.59 g/t Au and 12.9 g/t Ag. The deposit was discovered in early 2006 during a greenfields program conducted by Aurelian Resources, a Canadian junior explorer. Discovery resulted from systematic drill testing of a conceptual geologic model, which predicted that auriferous veins would be present in andesitic volcanic rocks inferred to underlie a steep silicified rib cutting a fluvial conglomerate sequence.

Dissolution and replacement creep: a significant deformation mechanism in mid-crustal rocks

Zoning patterns and zoning truncations in metamorphic minerals in a granodioritic orthogneiss indicate that strain and S-C fabrics in these rocks were produced by dissolution, precipitation, and replacement processes, even at epidote-amphibolite fades metamorphic conditions. The metamorphic fabric is defined by alternating layers and folia dominated by quartz, feldspars, and biotite + epidote. Zoning patterns in most metamorphic plagioclase, orthoclase, epidote, and sphene are truncated at boundaries normal to the shortening direction, suggesting dissolution. Interfaces of relict igneous orthoclase phenocrysts that face the shortening direction are embayed and replaced by biotite, epidote, and myrmekitic intergrowths of plagioclase and quartz. Metamorphic plagioclase grains are also replaced by epidote. We interpret these microstractures to reflect strain-enhanced dissolution. The cores of many grains show asymmetric overgrowths with at least two generations of beards, all oriented on the ends of grains that face the extension direction. We interpret these textures to reflect precipitation of components dissolved by deformation-enhanced dissolution. While biotite and quartz probably deformed by dislocation creep, the overall deformation was accommodated by dissolution perpendicular to the shortening direction, and precipitation parallel to it. These chemical processes must have been activated at lower stresses than the dislocation creep predicted from extrapolations of data from experiments in dry rocks. Thus wet crust is likely to be weaker than calculated from these experimental studies

Distributed acoustic sensing in geophysics. Methods and applications / Распределенное акустическое зондирование в геофизике. Методы и приложения

Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) systems are optoelectronic instruments that measure acoustic interactions (distributed strain or strain rate) along the length of a fiber-optic sensing cable. DAS observation systems can record sound and vibration signals along several tens of kilometers of sensing optical fiber with fine spatial resolution (1–10 m) and over a wide frequency range (from millihertz to tens of kilohertz). DAS provides a large sensing aperture for acquiring high-resolution acoustic data in both time and space domains. The advantages of DAS technology have enabled its rapid adoption across a range of applications, including geophysics geohydrology, environmental monitoring, geotechnical and civil engineering (railroad, tunnel, and bridge monitoring), hazard mitigation and prevention, and safety and security fields. <...>
