The Geology of Alaska summarizes the onshore and offshore geology, tectonic evolution, and mineral resources of Alaska and the adjacent continental margin. The volume was prepared at a particularly appropriate time because it follows a period during which there has been an explosive increase in the amount, quality, and regional coverage of earth science data collected in Alaska and because the unifying concepts of plate tectonics and accretionary terranes have become available as a framework for interpreting the data.

The geology of Cuba has been a challenge to geologists because of features such as the presence of well-preserved Jurassic ammonites, the rich Tertiary foraminiferal faunas (including remarkable Paleogene orbitoids), the gigantic Upper Cretaceous rudistids, the spectacular limestone Mogotes of Pinar del Rio, the extensive outcrops of ultrabasic igneous rocks, the chromite and manganese deposits, and the extraordinary structural complexity. In addition to these features, the numerous petroleum seeps, many of them coming out of basic igneous rock, have attracted much attention.

This book includes the salient results of work carried out on the different aspects of the geology of Egypt: Geomorphology and evolution of landscape; tectonics, geophysical regime, volcanicity, Precambrian geology, geologic history and paleogeography, paleontology of selected taxa, ore deposits, petroleum geology and groundwater reservoirs. An exhaustive bibliography is also included. Written by scholars from Egypt, Germany and the United States, the book is edited by Professor Rushdi Said, consultant and former head of the Geological Survey of Egypt.

Fluvial deposits represent the preserved record of one of the major nonmarine environments. They accumulate in large and small intermontane valleys, in the broad valleys of trunk rivers, in the wedges of alluvial fans flanking areas of uplift, in the outwash plains fronting melting glaciers, and in coastal plains. The nature of alluvial assemblages - their lithofacies composition, vertical stratigraphic record, and architecture - reflect an interplay of many processes, from the wandering of individual channels across a floodplain, to the long-term effects of uplift and subsidence. Fluvial deposits are a sensitive indicator of tectonic processes, and also carry subtle signatures of the climate at the time of deposition. They are the hosts for many petroleum and mineral deposits. This book is about all these subjects.
