Evolution of the Appalachian orogen spanned the Paleozoic and Mesozoic Eras. Within the confines of the northern Appalachians of the United States (the New England States - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island - and New York), the sequence of known major Appalachian tectonic events is late Proterozoic rifting of the protoNorth American craton; Ordovician subduction accompanied by destruction of the Iapetus Ocean and by obduction of tectonostratigraphic sequences; Devonian deformation, accretion, plutonism, and metamorphism, of uncertain plate tectonic context but likely related to a continent continentcollision; formation of late Carboniferous transtensive (oblique strikeslip) basins in which coal formed; and late Carboniferous to Permian thermal, plutonic, and metamorphic events. During the Mesozoic, the New England Appalachians underwent crustal extension associated with both alkalic and tholeiitic magmatism. This field trip is based on reconnaissance geologic mapping in the Charlottesville 10 X 2 0 quadrangle as part of a new edition of the Geologic Map of Virginia (Figure 1). The first day of the field trip will be spent examining high-rank Grenville-age basement rocks that make up the core of the Blue Ridge anticlinorium. The second day will be spent examining greenschist facies Precambrian and Early Paleozoic metasedimentary and metavolcanic cover rocks that unconformably overlie the Grenville basement and dip to the southeast, off the southeastern limb of the anticlinorium <...>

This field trip will focus on the petrology and structure of basementcored anticlines in the central Appalachian Piedmont, near Baltimore, Maryland (Figure 1). These structures have long been interpreted as mantled gneiss domes in the sense of Eskola (1949). However, recent work suggests that they are recumbent nappes, arched by later folding about steeply dipping axial planes. <...>

The Fennoscandian Shield forms the north-westernmost part of the East European craton and constitutes large parts of Finland, NW Russia, Norway, and Sweden (Fig. 1). The oldest rocks yet found in the shield have been dated at 3.5 Ga (Huhma et al. 2004) and major orogenies took place in the Archaean and Palaeoproterozoic.

Early Precambrian eclogites are widespread in the Belomorian Province of the Fennoscandian shield. There are three points of view on the their age: 1) Archean and Paleoproterozoic; 2) solely Mesoarchean; 3) solely Paleoproterozoic. The goal of this field trip is to show all these types of eclogites including Archean and Paleoproterozoic (from the authors' point of view) eclogites, eclogitized Paleoproterozoic coronitic gabbroids, Archean zoisitites and their structural position in the Gridino, Salma (Uzkaya Salma and Shirokaya Salma) and Kuru-Vaara areas of the Belomorian Province. The geological excursions provide a good opportunity for the participants and the reader to exanimate these contradicting points of view immediately at beautiful outcrops on islands of the White Sea, on the benches of the Kuru-Vaara quarry and in the walls of road pits in the Salma area.
