In this introductory chapter we describe general problems of spatial environmental data analysis, modeling, validation and visualization. Many of these problems are considered in detail in the following chapters using geostatistical models, machine learning algorithms (MLA) of neural networks and Support Vector Machines, and the Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) approach. The term “mapping” in the book is considered not only as an interpolation in two- or threedimensional geographical space, but in a more general sense of estimating the desired dependencies from empirical data.

The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with guidance on the development and implementation of cost- effective and defensible environmental sampling programs that are designed to collect data needed to:

• Define the nature and extent of contamination

• Calculate baseline human health and ecological risk

• Identify contaminant migration pathways

• Predict rates of contaminant migration

• Evaluate the viability of potential remedial alternatives

• Support treatability testing

• Assess the effectiveness of a remedial alternative during implementation

• Determine if remedial action objectives have been met

• Dispose of waste material properly <...>

В монографии представлен данные о рекреационных ресурсах крымского курорта Коктебель и его архитектурно-планировочной организации. Рассмотрены количественные и качественные характеристики рекреационных ресурсов, приведены ландшафтное зонирование территории и построение функционально-планировочной структуры. Предложены мероприятия по восстановлению элементов природного и антропогенного ландшафта. Впервые применительно к курорту охарактеризованы факторы, ограничивающие его развитие. Разработаны предложения по оптимизации использования ресурсов курорта, имеющие выраженную экологическую направленность. Обоснована концепция формирования экокурорта. 

Для архитекторов, экологов при оценке соверемнного состояния территории курорта и прогнозирования возможных его изменений в будущем, а также для преподавателей, студентов вузов, краеведов и туристов

At the outset of this book, it is important to articulate clearly what we mean by ‘coast’, because the term means different things to different people. For most holidaymakers, the coast is synonymous with the beach. For birdwatchers, the coast generally refers to the intertidal zone; while for cartographers, the coast is simply a line on the map separating the land from the sea. Coastal scientists and managers tend to take a broader view.According to our perspective, the coast represents that region of the Earth’s surface that has been affected by coastal processes, i.e. waves and tides, during the Quaternary geological period (the last 2.6M years).

Впервые представлены обобщенные данные по геологии, ландшафтам, флоре и растительности, микобиоте, энтомофауне, позвоночным животным этой территории; рассматриваются процессы ее заселения и различные аспекты природопользования.

RESOURCES FOR THE FUTURE (RFF) is an independent nonprofit organization engaged in research and public education on natural resource and environmental issues. Its mission is to create and disseminate knowledge that helps people make better decisions about the conservation and use of their natural resources and the environment. RFF neither lobbies nor takes positions on current policy issues. Because the work of RFF focuses on how people make use of scarce resources, its primary research discipline is economics. However, its staff also includes social scientists from other fields, ecologists, environmental health scientists, meteorologists, and engineers. Staff members pursue a wide variety of interests, including forest economics, recycling, multiple use of public lands, the costs and benefits of pollution control, endangered species, energy and national security, hazardous waste policy, climate resources, and quantitative risk assessment. <...>

We are facing a global mineral resource crisis. In fact, we have two of them. First, Earth has a finite supply of minerals for a population that is growing faster than at any time in history
(Figure 1.1). Second, mineral consumption is growing even faster than the population. Until recently, we were deeply concerned that most minerals were used in more developed countries (MDCs) with smaller consumption in less developed countries (LDCs) (Table 1.1).

Increasing population density and industrialization are creating a high strain on the natural environment and resources of many countries. Therefore, precautionary measures to protect the environment and remedial action to repair the damages of the past have high priority. Resources to be protected are surface water and groundwater, soil and air. Hazards to these resources are landfills and industrial sites as well as mining facilities, including tailings, conditioning plants, and smelters, oil refineries, distribution facilities and pipelines, gas stations and other areas used by humans (e.g., military training sites).
