Coalbed gas has been considered a hazard since the early 19th century when the first mine gas explosions occurred in the United States in 1810 and France in 1845. In eastern Australia methane-related mine disasters occurred late in the 19th century with hundreds of lives lost in New South Wales, and as recently as 1995 in Queensland's Bowen Basin.

THREE A S TM STANDARDS are available for sampling coal: ASTM Practice for Collection of Channel Samples of Coal in the Mine (D 4596), ASTM Test Methods for Collection of a Gross Sample of Coal (D 2234), and ASTM Practice for Collection of Coal Samples from Core (D 5192). The first two standards are applicable only to existing mining operations, test pits, or transportation of coal.

Coal is still a dominant fuel in America, Australia, China, Mongolia and Russia, but more and more countries are abandoning coal and turning to alternative sources of energy, increasingly renewable energy provided by wind, wave or solar power. So now is an opportune time to take stock of the impact that coal and coal mining have had on countries around the world. Some 48 countries have institutions recording or commemorating that history in the form of museums, heritage centres or preserved colliery sites, of which this book considers 432 examples. It is not a straightforward account of the history of coal mining but rather an examination of how that history has been presented by different institutions and cultures.
