This Introduction - and its philosophies - are dedicated to the late Johann (Hans) Steiner (Canada) and John Elliston (Australia) for their respective concepts offered far ahead of most of their contemporary fellow scientists. That is, Steiner’s ideas in “The sequence of geological events and the dynamics of the Milky Way Galaxy - the present cosmic year; a preliminary study” (J. Geol. SOC. Aust., 1967, 14(1): 99 - 132)
The major objective of this text is to provide information on characteristics of organic matter in sedimentary rocks and to relate these characteristics to processes relevant in their deposition, diagenesis, and weathering. Organic matter derived from biological precursors is a constituent of most sedimentary rocks. Its amount in recent and subrecent sediments is known to be controlled by a variety of physical and chemical factors such as transport distance from the site of plant growth to the site of deposition or oxygen content of water at the sedimentJwater interface.

Diagenesis comprises abroad spectrum of physical, chemical and biological post-depositional processes by which original sedimentary assemblages and their interstitial pore waters react in an attempt to reach textural and geochemical equilibrium with their environment (Curtis, 1977; Burley et al., 1985). These processes are continually active as the mbient environment evolves in terms of temperature, pressure and chemistry during the deposition, burial and uplift cycle of basin history.
В монографии рассмотрено геологическое и инженерно-геологическое строения верхней части разреза шельфа Охотского, Белого и Лаптевых морей. Выявлены основные условия голоценовой седиментации. Детально рассмотрены физико-химические, механические и биохимические свойства современных донных органо-минеральных грунтов (илов) шельфа. Выявлены тенденции к закономерному изменению физикохимических свойств глинистых илов с глубиной залегания. Дан анализ взаимосвязи гранулометрического и минерального составов илов с основными физико-химическими свойствами грунтовой среды.

The intensive studies in the I 960's and I 970's of modern hallow marine carbonate environments in the Persian Gulf (e.g., Shearman, 1963, 1966; Kinsman, 1966; Butler, I 970; Kendall and Skipwith, 1969; Purser, 1973), Florida and the Bahamas (e.g., Shinn and others, 1969; Hardie, 1977a; Enos and Perkins, 1979), and Western Australia (e.g., Logan and others, 1970, 1974b), led to spectacular advances in our understanding of the deposition and early diagenesis of carbonate rocks. These stud1es were part of a major revolution in edimentology that saw a radical change from an approach based heavily on grain textures to one based on sedimentary structures and early diagenetic features.
