Излагаются результаты исследований режима, динамики и эволюции ледников Арктики и Антарктиды, основанные на применении современных дистанционных, геофизических, изотопно-геохимических методов, комплексном изучении глубоких скважин и ледяного керна. Рассматриваются история оледенения северной и южной полярных областей в кайнозое, строение, гидротермическое состояние и режим субполярных ледников и особенности их формирования в условиях изменяющегося климата, тепломассообмен на нижней поверхности шельфовых .ледников Антарктиды, колебания ее краевой зоны и ледников Арктики. Изложенные материалы служат основой для разработки принципов и методов прогноза развития полярных ледников.
Книга рассчитана на гляциологов, климатологов, геофизиков, палеогеографов, морских геологов, географов.

This is a book on the dynamics of the atmosphere and ocean, with an emphasis on the fundamentals and on the large-scale circulation. By ‘large-scale’ I mean scales between that of the weather (a few hundred kilometres in the atmosphere and a few tens of kilometres in the ocean, which indeed has its own weather) and the global scale. My focus is our own planet Earth, for that is where we live, but the principles and methodology used should be appropriate for the study of the atmospheres and oceans of other planets.
This book is mainly about accelerated soil erosion, which is the rapid loss of soil from slopes at rates much faster than those occurring under natural geological conditions. By soil one has in mind the whole system of weathered material and not simply the upper few centimetres in which plants grow. With this definition, it is sometimes difficult and even impossible to differentiate soil from unconsolidated bedrock materials. This broader definition of soil is matched by a broader definition of the erosion problem to include the entire area of small catchments up to several kilometres in length. This is because it is meaningful, in the environments investigated and at the scale studied, to include channel effects as significant contributors to the erosion problem. The economic and social aspects of soil erosion are two-sided; what is lost from fields and orchards is subsequently redeposited in channels and reservoirs and on fields and factories. <...>

This book is concerned with the role of the ocean in the climate system, with a focus on physical processes relevant to scientifically describing and understanding that role. The two chapters in this Part I offer a context for the discussion extending over the nearly 30 chapters that follow. We are introduced in this Part to notions of the huge space and time scales over which ocean phenomena play a role in climate. Such phenomena extend from the millimeter and seconds relevant for irreversibly mixing heat, carbon, and other tracers, to the global scales of sea level changes, water mass variations, and air–sea interactions that comprise natural and anthropogenic climate fluctuations. We also encounter evidence seen for rather large fluctuations in the paleo record, and consider future climate scenarios suggested through computer simulations. <...>
