The Altaids is one of the largest accretionary orogenic collages in the world with the highest rate of Phanerozoic continental growth and significant metallogenic importance. It is widely accepted that subduction-related orogenesis of the Altaids started in the late Precambrian and gradually migrated southward (present coordinates). However, it is uncertain when and how the building of the Altaids was finally completed.

The Asian continent formed during the past 800 m.y. during late Neoproterozoic through Jurassic closure of the Tethyan ocean basins, followed by late Mesozoic circum-Pacific and Cenozoic Himalayan orogenies. The oldest gold deposits in Asia reflect accretionary events along the margins of the Siberia, Kazakhstan, North China, Tarim–Karakum, South China, and Indochina Precambrian blocks while they were isolated within the Paleotethys and surrounding Panthalassa Oceans. Orogenic gold deposits are associated with large-scale, terrane-bounding fault systems and broad areas of deformation that existed along many of the active margins of the Precambrian blocks. Deposits typically formed during regional transpressional to transtensional events immediately after to as much as 100 m.y. subsequent to the onset of accretion or collision. The Asian continent is the main part of the greatest continental plate—Eurasian plate, on the Earth. The Asian continent covers the tremendous area and has a very long geological history, complex intraplate deformations, a lot of mineral resources and the changeable ecologic environment. Researching the Asian tectonics, which plays a dominant role in the resources and environments, is an interesting subject. With the rapid development of society and economy, it is becoming more and more important, interesting and urgent to re-recognize and understand the relationship between the Asia tectonic evolution and giant ore deposit (including giant or supergiant ore fields and provinces) from the perspective of lithospheric plate tectonics.

This report on nonfuel mineral deposits and resources of the Asia and the Pacific region is one of a series of geologic regional reports produced by the U.S. Geological Survey to provide up to date summary information of known and undiscovered mineral resources around the globe (Cunningham and others, 2005; Nokleberg and others, 2005; Zientek and others, 2005). These geologic regional reports are designed to be informative with respect to the location and endowment of mineral resources for each region. Boundaries of these regions are those of the USGS Minerals Yearbooks, which monitor production and economic factors affecting the mineral industries of the regions. Additional and historic information related to mineral production statistics also can be found in the Yearbooks.
