Hydrology has been almost taken over by mathematical modeling. However, natural systems are multidimensional and multiparametric, and to understand them real data—observations and measurements obtained in real study areas—are needed. The following are examples of the applied research approach:

The three spatial dimensions are surveyed via a large number of sampling and measuring points, e.g., springs, wells, drillings, geological surveys, and more.

The time dimension is addressed by investigation of the geological and hydrological dynamics of the system, e.g., by dating of the groundwater host rocks, by isotopic dating of the water itself, and on the small scale by seasonally repeated measurements.

The ceratopista or horn-faced dinosaurs are exquisite creatures. They include large, exotic dinosaurs, the ceratopsids, with wondrous ornaments on their heads, including dazzling combinations of horns over the nose and eyes and lengthy frills behind the skull, often enhanced with rococo tracery and detailing. The ceratopsids are found only in western North America, although perhaps someday soon they will be found in Asia as well. Ceratopsians also include small, lithe protoceratopsids, shared equally between Asia and western North America. Protoceratopsids, which tend to be more tasteful and restrained in their adornments than ceratopsids, presumably include the ancestors of the ceratopsids. Recently admitted into the ceratopsian clan is the small Psittacosaurus from Asia, which is so generalized in its structure that it has neither horns nor a frill. <...>

Areas where digital signal processing has made a significant impact include telecommunications, man-machine communications, computer engineering, multimedia applications, medical technology, radar and sonar, seismic data analysis, and remote sensing, to name just a few. <...>

Magmatism in the continental and oceanic lithosphere contributes to the rejuvenation of Earth’s crust and is fundamental for the evolution of life on our planet. After their formation, magmas crystallize, differentiate, degas, mix with other magmas, and interact with the surrounding lithologies over a wide range of pressures and temperatures. The petrological and geochemical signatures of volcanic and plutonic rocks reflect the diversity of the petrogenetic processes. Deciphering these signatures has fundamental implications for elucidating the eruptive behavior of volcanoes and quantifying the mass fluxes related to the generation and growth of the crust.

Hydrogeology is now considered to be a core course in the curriculum of undergraduate geology programs as well as many fields of engineering. There is ongoing demand for persons with training in hydrogeology by consulting organizations, state and federal regulatory agencies, and industrial firms. Most of the employment in hydrogeology is in the environmental area. This is a book that will help prepare students for either a career in hydrogeology or in other areas of environmental science and engineering where a strong background in hydrogeology is needed. <...>

Thousands of scholars, professors, teachers, and members of the public have visited the Geological Museum Valentí Masachs, associated with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) (Polytechnic University of Catalonia) in Manresa (Barcelona, Catalonia), since it opened in June 1980.

The Geological Museum Valentí Masachs is an unconventional one, very different from the traditional type. The exhibition’s main aim is to visualize the connection between human activity and planet Earth (Fig. 1).

Our experience as teachers indicates that a traditional format where the instructor provides students with theoretical knowledge through a series of lectures and abstract textbook problems is not sufficient to prepare students to tackle real geotechnical challenges. There is a disjunct between what students are taught in universities and what they are expected to do as engineers. Although students may easily derive complex equations in class, they often struggle when faced with practical engineering problems in the workplace. It is thus not surprising that a project-based approach to learning, which partially simulates what engineers do in real life, has proved to be a valid alternative to the traditional method (Gratchev and Jeng, 2018; Gratchev et al., 2018). Project-based learning not only provides students with opportunities to better understand the fundamentals of geotechnical engineering, but it also allows them to gain more practical experience and learn how to apply theory to practice.  In addition, working on a practical project makes the learning process more relevant and engaging. <...>

Указатель составлен и издан с целью облегчения поисков статей, опубликованных в журнале “Известия НАН Республики Армения Науки о Земле” с года его издания — 1948 по 2007гг. Указатель представляет интерес для специалистов геологического, географического и историко-библиографического профиля, а также студентов. Для более широкого круга пользователей составлен также электронный вариант издания.

В книге изложена история развития медеплавильного дела в Армении, описаны методы выплавки меди, приведена характеристика действовавших агрегатов, их технические показатели с момента возобновления медного дела в Армении (1763—1770 гг.) до наших дней.
Попутно приводятся данные правового и экономического положения трудящихся медных предприятий Армении за тот же период.
