The report that follows presents a first statement of the results of a study sponsored by the European Economic Community and the Department of Trade and Industry as communicated to a meeting of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy Midlands Section at which the President (Dr A. J. Robinson) and the Section Chairman (Professor N. A. Warner) were present. It was my privilege to attend and to make some concluding remarks; these form the basis of this preface. The Geological Survey, now in its 154th year, has as one of its principal objects the provision of geological maps based on surveying in maximum detail at a scale of 1:10 000. In areas where extractive or other engineering industry is important, the surveys have been revised more than once as new subsurface data became available.

The aim of this book is to summarize the current state of knowledge on the environmental geochemistry and resource potential of metallurgical slags. Hundreds of millions of tonnes of slag, a by-product of pyrometallurgical processing of ferrous and non-ferrous ores or recyclable materials, are generated annually worldwide. These slags are either landfilled, reprocessed, or repurposed.

Geophysics is a principal tool for geoscientists that helps decipher not only deeper geology but also formational processes and chronological changes in the physical property contrasts between the causative bodies and the surroundings at the different strata of the subsurface.

In contrast to the recognized man/machine system of industry, the production process of mineral resources brings about a man/machine/nature system. The dynamic evolution of this system is characterized by a steady increase in the level of human labour. This also means that labour becomes increasingly complex and complicated due to the interaction with increased automation and mechanization.

The notion that mining can contribute positively to the economic and human development of mineral wealth countries makes a lot of sense, especially given the huge revenue mineral wealth developing countries can generate from the sector to alleviate poverty.

The results of experimental and theoretical studies of isotopic composition of natural waters of the Earth’s hydrosphere are analyzed and summarized in this book. These studies represent a modern direction of science of the natural waters actively developed in hydrology, hydrogeology, oceanography, and climatology starting from the middle of last century. The book is a further development and improvement of the earlier published author’s works: Cosmogenic Isotopes of the Hydrosphere, Nauka, Moscow, 1984; Isotopy of the Hydrosphere, Nauka, Moscow, 1983; Environmental Isotopes in the Hydrosphere, Nedra, Moscow, 1975 and Environmental Isotopes in the Hydrosphere, Wiley, Chichester–New York, 1982.

The young Mary Shelley prophesied that science would create a monster that would forever breach it from society. In the XX century, this Cassandra prophecy seems to have come true. A scientific approach to man, mankind and nature has led to a huge bloody attempt to reshape all by which this century will be memorable.

As a member of the Danish Government Expedition to East Green­ .fi. land in 1 926-27 under the leadership of Dr. LAUGE Kocu I had ample opportunity of studying the sedimentary deposits within the Scoresby Sound area, especially the Jurassie beds in Jameson Land and Liverpool Land. The present paper deals with the Lias, which l subjected to a particular investigation. It is rny p leasant duty to thank the leader of the expedition, Dr. LAUGE Kocu, for p leasant company and much unselfish assistance during the expedition and for handing over to me for description a number of Liassic fossils from Liverpool Land.
