What is economic geology? It may be defined as the study of geological bodies and materials that may be useful to mankind. The materials included are fuels, metallic and non-metallic minerals, rocks and water. This book will exclude considerations of water and building materials, and will concentrate on ores and fuels.

Some people may say that economic geology is a subdiscipline within the geological sciences, but this is not strictly correct, for it is unlike other su}?disciplines, such as palaeontology, igneous petrology, structural geology, and so on, which all go to make up the science of geology, for each of these can exist independently. Economic geology cannot exist as a separate discipline, for it has to be based on the broad spectrum of the geological sciences.

The study of rocks and other mineral associations, especially of ore deposits, starts out from the purely descriptive. The composition of these materials, their geologic position in the most comprehensive sense, and their gross and fine structures and textures, etc., must be established. Further research must explain, first the "How"', then the "Why". The latter must comprise the interpretation of the association of materials and geologic position as well as each detail of texture and structure, even the smallest. On the knowledge obtained, one must build further and must generalize. Things of which the "Why" can be explained directly will serve in the explanation of others. In doing this the danger of circular reasoning will exist ; criticism is therefore invariably necessary, self-criticism most of all. The interpretations must, if possible, be reached along several paths, and the validity of the various paths must be carefully considered. <...>

The ore microscope is the basic instrument for the petrographic examination of the large and economically important group of minerals referred to collectively as "ore" or "opaque" minerals. Although neither term is strictly correct (inasmuch as pyrite is opaque but rarely, if ever, constitutes an economically viable ore and sphalerite and cassiterite are important ore minerals but are not opaque), both terms are frequently used synonymously.

Прошло 110 лет со дня рождения и 21 год со дня смерти Льва Николаевича Овчинникова – известного советского и российского ученого-геолога и директора нашего Института минералогии, гео-химии, кристаллохимии редких элементов (ИМГРЭ) на протяжении 20 лет (1966–1986 гг.) – умного, широко образованного, честного и бескомпромиссного человека, положившего свою жизнь на алтарь геологической науки.

В работе обобщены данные по геологическому строению, сланценосности и качеству горючих сланцев основных сланценосных районов европейского Севера СССР. Изложение сопровождается большим количеством картографического материала.

Даны практические рекомендации по направлениям поисков и разведки горючих сланцев и намечены пути их использования.

Исследования проводились по региональной программе «Тимано-Печор- ский территориально-производственный комплекс». Результаты этих исследований могут быть использованы при планировании и производстве поисково- разведочных работ на европейском Севере СССР.

The present-day crustal deformation in the North African area is mainly driven by the NWSE to NNW–SSE convergence (4–5 mm/yr) between the African and Eurasian plates (Mckenzie, 1972; Nocquet & Calais, 2004; Serpelloni et al., 2007). This convergence is accommodated over a wide deformation zone (the Tellian Atlas) implying the existence of significant seismic activity. This domain represents the southern part of the Alpine ranges at the boundary between the African and Eurasian plates.

The forms in which metals are found in the crust of the earth and as seabed deposits depend on their reactivity with their environment, particularly with oxygen, sulfur, and carbon dioxide. Gold and platinum metals are found principally in the native or metallic form. Silver, copper, and mercury are found native as well as in the form of sulfides, carbonates, and chlorides.

Minerals make up about 50% of the volume of most soils. They provide physical support for plants, and create the water- and air-filled pores that make plant growth possible. Mineral weathering releases plant nutrients that are retained by other minerals through adsorption, cation exchange, and precipitation.

Иноцерамиды являются одной из руководящих групп фауны и успешно используются для детального расчленения и корреляции меловых отложений на многих континентах земного шара. Представители группы имеют большое значение для целей корреляции в связи с широким географическим распространением, сравнительно кратковременным существованием и ярко выраженной изменчивостью во времени.
Стратиграфическая значимость иноцерамид нашла широкое применение в практике зонального расчленения меловых отложений. Для некоторых регионов разработаны самостоятельные зональные иноцерамовые шкалы, которые отражают, прежде всего, биотические события мелового времени определенного региона. Представители иноцерамид используются в качестве видов-индексов для обозначения отдельных отрезков меловой системы.
