It provides extensive background information not only on different coal characteristics and properties but also on the way those characteristics determine technological properties.

Coalbed gas has been considered a hazard since the early 19th century when the first mine gas explosions occurred in the United States in 1810 and France in 1845. In eastern Australia methane-related mine disasters occurred late in the 19th century with hundreds of lives lost in New South Wales, and as recently as 1995 in Queensland's Bowen Basin.

Electromagnetic wave resistivity methods in Measurement-While-Drilling and Logging-While-Drilling applications, or simply MWD/LWD, are now approaching their fourth decade of practice. Книга «По таёжным тропам» написана известным геологом Борисом Ивановичем Вронским, участником первых колымских экспедиций 20-х – 30-х годов, когда в пустынных и диких местах на побережье Колымы, в бухте Нагаева, высадились первые отряды геологов. По рекам с экзотическими названиями — Нелькоба, Аркагала, Чалбыга, Эмтегей — двинулись поисковые партии. На вооружении геологов тогда еще не было ни вездеходов, ни раций, ни вертолетов, а в районе Колымы — даже топографических карт.
