The previous chapter dealt with planar geological surfaces. A geological surface which is curved is said to be folded. Most folding is the result of crustal deformation whereby rock layering such as bedding has been subjected to a shortening in a direction within the layering. To demonstrate this place both hands on a tablecloth and draw them together; the shortening of the tablecloth results in a number of folds.

Subsurface fluid flow is critically dependent on the 3D distribution of petrophysical properties in rocks. In sequences of sedimentary rocks these properties are strongly influenced by lithology and facies distribution that stem from the geologic processes that generated them.

Petroleum resource evaluations have been performed by geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, engineers, and statisticians for many decades in an attempt to estimate resource potential in a given region. Because of differences in the geological and statistical methods used for assessment, and the amount and type of data available, resource evaluations often vary. Accounts of various methods have been compiled by Haun (1975), Grenon (1979), Masters (1985), Rice (1986), and Mast et al. (1989). In addition, Lee and Gill (1999) used the Michigan reef play data to evaluate the merits of the log-geometric method of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); the PETRIMES method developed by the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC); the Arps and Roberts method; Bickel, Nair, and Wang’s nonparametric fi nite population method; Kaufman’s anchored method; and the geo-anchored method of Chen and Sinding–Larson. <...>

Geography has always been important to humans. Stone-age hunters anticipated the location of their quarry, early explorers lived or died by their knowledge of geography, and current societies work and play based on their understanding of who belongs where. Applied geography, in the form of maps and spatial information, has served discovery, planning, cooperation, and conflict for at least the past 3000 years (Figure 1-1). Maps are among the most beautiful and useful documents of human civilization.

Not long ago Business Week, in a feature story entitled “Now the Squeeze on Metals,” warned ominously: America's industrial might—already threatened by the deepening energy mess—is in for another resource crunch. . . . All signs point to longer-range problems in U.S. mineral supply that will not be solved by cyclic swings in the economy. If not solved, those problems could make U.S. business less competitive, lower America’s standard of living, and endanger the national security.

This book aims to give the first comprehensive explanation of the metallogenic areas of Fennoscandia, which have recently been described in the Metallogenic Map of the Fennoscandian Shield. The Fennoscandian metallogenic map shows the extent of presently known metallogenic areas.

When I first started conducting research in Mongolia, I found that I could make a room full of anthropologists jealous by telling them where I worked. To a discipline whose members pride themselves on working in exotic locations, Mongolia is a glamorous research site, for few Western and even fewer American anthropologists had worked there during the Cold War.1 Young anthropologists started to trickle in during the early 1990s: Norwegian, Danish, and French graduate students; Christopher Kaplonski, Peter Marsh, and Katherine Petrie from the United States; and, of course, the University of Cambridge research group (Mongolian and Inner Asian Studies Unit) headed by Caroline Humphrey and now David Sneath. So anthropology, my discipline, was becoming interested in Mongolia.

This report responds to a request by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) that the National Research Council (NRC) review its concept of The National Map. The National Map is envisioned by USGS as a database providing “public domain core geographic data about the United States and its territories that other agencies can extend, enhance, and reference as they concentrate on maintaining other data that are unique to their needs” (USGS, 2001).

The origin of granite has for long fascinated geologists though serious debate on the topic may be said to date from a famous meeting of the Geological Society of France in 1847. My own introduction to the subject began exactly one hundred years later when, in an interview with Professor H.H. Read, I entered his study as an amateur fossil collector and left it as a committed granite petrologist - after just ten minutes!
