The intensive studies in the I 960's and I 970's of modern hallow marine carbonate environments in the Persian Gulf (e.g., Shearman, 1963, 1966; Kinsman, 1966; Butler, I 970; Kendall and Skipwith, 1969; Purser, 1973), Florida and the Bahamas (e.g., Shinn and others, 1969; Hardie, 1977a; Enos and Perkins, 1979), and Western Australia (e.g., Logan and others, 1970, 1974b), led to spectacular advances in our understanding of the deposition and early diagenesis of carbonate rocks. These stud1es were part of a major revolution in edimentology that saw a radical change from an approach based heavily on grain textures to one based on sedimentary structures and early diagenetic features. North Africa contains some 4% of the world's remaining oil and gas reserves, and is now one of the most active exploration areas. This volume represents the first attempt at a compilation of the petroleum geology of North Africa, documenting a series of papers collected on the petroleum geology of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Ubya and the western part of Egypt. The main objectives of this book are to increase the level of documentation towards that appropriate for such major petroleum provinces and to facilitate the application of analogues between North African countries and beyond.

This book is mainly about accelerated soil erosion, which is the rapid loss of soil from slopes at rates much faster than those occurring under natural geological conditions. By soil one has in mind the whole system of weathered material and not simply the upper few centimetres in which plants grow. With this definition, it is sometimes difficult and even impossible to differentiate soil from unconsolidated bedrock materials. This broader definition of soil is matched by a broader definition of the erosion problem to include the entire area of small catchments up to several kilometres in length. This is because it is meaningful, in the environments investigated and at the scale studied, to include channel effects as significant contributors to the erosion problem. The economic and social aspects of soil erosion are two-sided; what is lost from fields and orchards is subsequently redeposited in channels and reservoirs and on fields and factories. <...>

На юго-востоке Русской платформы развиты отложения девонской, каменноугольной и пермской систем. Они распространены на всей площади и (представлены всеми отделами. На размытой поверхности палеозоя встречаются образования триаса, юры, мела, третичной системы, но лишь в виде отдельных участков, не образующих в настоящее время единого целого. Все они покрыты чехлом четвертичных отложений. На дневную поверхность выступают верхнепермские осадки и более молодые.

Образования нижнего отдела перми встречаются в местах наибольших поднятий. Девонские и карбоновые отложения вскрыты глубокими буровыми скважинами и обнажены лишь на западном склоне Урала.

For the past 37 years the Mineralogical Society of America, and in conjunction with the Geochemical Society (since 2000), have sponsored and published 72 review volumes that communicate the results of significant advances in research in the Earth sciences. Several of these have either directly or indirectly addressed the fundamental importance, role, and behavior of volatile components on processes influencing magma rheology, crystallization, evolution, eruption, and related metasomatism and mineralization.
