This book has been written to bring up to date The Interior of the Earth, published in 1971 following the plate tectonic revolution. Plate tectonic theory has now been widely accepted as a unifying theory for the origin ofthe Earth’s major surface features, and the broad viewpoint taken in 1971 has been vindicated. The last ten years, however, has been a period of continuing rapid advance in earth sciences. The structure of the Earth’s interior has become much better defined. A new understanding ofthe physical processes within the Earth which permit the escape of heat from the deep interior, drive the geomagnetic dynamo and cause the plate motions, is emerging. Consequently, much of the original text has had to be re-written to produce this new book.

Even though our limited perceptions provide us with only a brief glimpse of the Universe, the main lesson that we learn from our observation is that the world is complicated. Very complicated. Every part of the universe interacts with the other parts; the responses of each component are never proportional to the applied forces, and the feedbacks of one subsystem on another cannot be discarded. As a result, processes are unpredictable, and chaotic behavior is a common occurrence. Disorder and turbulence become rife. Yet from the chaotic background, coherent structures sometimes emerge, patterns form, and local order is generated.

Primitive Asteroids and Meteorites was born as a collaboration among members of NASA’s Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) Formulation Assessment and Support Team (FAST). As such, we own a great debt of gratitude to Daniel D. Mazanek and David M. Reeves at NASA’s Langley Research Center, to Paul A. Abell at the Johnson Space Center, to Michele Gates at NASA Headquarters, and to countless others who worked in developing this mission. In many ways, ARM allowed for asteroid exploration and mining to move into the tangible realm. ARM brought together a diverse and very passionate group of scientists and engineers who have made the study of meteorites, asteroids, and how to get us there into their lives’ work.

The history of the practice of earthquake geology extends more than a century into the past, but it is still only a fledgling field as a modern discipline. In fact, most of what we know has been learned only in the past quarter century. And so it is not surprising that this textbook is the first attempt to survey systematically the purposes, methods, and scientific principles of the geological investigation of earthquakes. Our impetus for writing this book was, in part, the frustration we felt in teaching, year after year, earthquake geology classes without the benefit of a textbook.

This book presents different aspects of earthquake research. In includes syntheses of recent works combined with new results and interpretations, applicable to diverse branches of earthquake seismology and geology. 
The destructive potential of earthquakes depends on their magnitude and the placement of the hypocenter. Worldwide efforts, such as the Global Seismographic Network of seismological and geophysical sensors and data centers, provides information that is essential to identify earthquake locations, understand the physics of the earthquakes and faulting mechanisms, as well as studies on paleoseismicity and earthquakes in the human history.

Hazards are processes that produce danger to human life and infrastructure. Risks are the potential or possibilities that something bad will happen because of the hazards. Disasters are that quite unpleasant result of the hazard occurrence that caused destruction of lives and infrastructure. Hazards, risks, and disasters have been coming under increasing strong scientific scrutiny in recent decades as a result of a combination of numerous unfortunate factors, many of which are quite out of control as a result of human actions.
