Rapid industrialization during the Five-Year Plan periods has brought about a considerable boost in the mineral development programmes in India. During the last decade, significantly enough, its contribution to the national economy has trebled: while in the First Plan period it was about Rs. 470 crores, it rose to nearly Rs. 1,500 crores by the end of the Third Plan. It is gratifying also to note that India has come to occupy a prominent position in the international markets through its mineral exports. However, in spite of the rapid industrial strides, the per capita consumption of the metals and industrial minerals in India is still far below that of any developed country. This calls for an extensive and systematic development of the mineral resources with a proper understanding of the mineralogy, beneficiation processes for upgrading the ores as well as the specifications of their usage in various industries.
