Many Third World and developing countries rely mainly on the utilisation of their natural resources to sustain their economic development. In the Philippines in particular, the exploitation of mineral resources has traditionally been a significant component of the Philippine economy (Domingo, 1993). Minerals, however, are nonrenewable resources. One reason for the decline in economic development of many developing countries is depletion of known mineral reserves. Hence, sustainable mineral resource development requires comprehensive mineral-resource information. One of the conclusions of the International Conference on Development and Mining, Washington, D.C., June 1994, is that the lack of basic geological and mineral-resource data is a fundamental constraint on the development of many countries (Östensson, 1996).
