Applied mathematics in hydrogeology / Прикладная математика в гидрогеологии

This book has grown from my lecture notes for a ten-week graduate class. It is intended for students and professionals who want to know how to derive some of those familiar equations and formulas in hydrogeology. Demonstrated with numerous examples, the book compiles various means for solving differential equations. All problems in this book have been re-solved, and in many cases new solutions are provided. Step-by-step procedures are given when a method is introduced. Readers of other disciplines may find that the methods presented here are also applicable to their fields of interest. 
Most textbooks on applied mathematics are structured according to a systematic methodology, and many students learn the subject matter by taking classes that are based on such an approach. The methods covered are usually fairly diversified and little time can be devoted to actual problemsolving applications. As a result, the mathematics and its applications still appear remotely related. On the other hand, a few textbooks are structured according to the subject areas with emphasis on the subjects rather than the development of mathematical skills. In such cases, important equations are often given without relevant derivations, thus necessitating many readers to take a detour to investigate how one equation leads to another. Such difficulty can lead to frustration that becomes more acute when reading journal articles, many of which provide only scanty derivations. I have therefore attempted in this book to bridge these two approaches at the risk of creating a haphazard presentation. <...>
