An introduction to geosynthetic engineering / Введение в геосинтетическую инженерию
Polymeric materials, particularly in the form of geosynthetics and fibres, have brought a transform‑ative impact on construction, revolutionizing ground infrastructure and environmental protection over the past few decades. With their diverse compositions, geosynthetics provide sustainable, efficient, cost‑effective, eco‑friendly, and energy‑saving solutions to a wide range of challenges. Their proper use enhances durability, reduces resource consumption, and minimizes environmental impact. Engineers have increasingly adopted geosynthetics, driving significant advancements in civil engineering (geotechnical, transportation, hydraulic, and environmental) and expanding their applications to mining, agricultural, and aquacultural engineering. These advancements have been driven by ongoing collaboration between industry experts and academic researchers. Since 1982, the International Conference on Geosynthetics has been held every 4 years, bringing together the global engineering community. Three key journals, Geotextiles and Geomembranes, Geosynthetics International, and the International Journal of Geosynthetics and Ground Engineering, focus on various aspects of geosynthetics and their applications. Addition‑ally, some books have been published on this subject, serving as valuable resources for students, researchers, and practising engineers.
This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to geosynthetic engineering, tailored for a one‑semester course for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students in geotechnical or civil engineering programmes worldwide. Organized into nine chapters, the content is presented in simple language with a well‑balanced mix of text, illustrations, tables, illustrative examples, and practice questions. This book covers fundamental concepts, along with the analysis and design aspects of geosynthetic applications, including fibre‑reinforced soils, with practical in‑sights drawn from field guidelines and case studies.
