Hydrogeology. Groundwater science and engineering / Гидрогеология. Наука и техника о подземных водах

Groundwater is an invisible but critical component of the hydrologic cycle. It represents the largest source of readily available drinking water on the planet and is therefore an essential resource for humans. Groundwater also provides baseflow to streams and plays a critical role in maintaining the health of freshwater ecosystems. Pressure on groundwater resources is increasing and there is growing evidence that extraction from major aquifers are gradually depleting groundwater reserves worldwide. Predicted climate variability, such as reduced precipitations or increased temperatures, may further exacerbate pressures on groundwater reserves. Emerging techniques to extract energy from geological materials are also creating challenges with respect to existing groundwater resources. Addressing these pressures and ensuring the sustainable development of groundwater resources represent a grand challenge for society and require a sound understanding of the physical and chemical processes that affect groundwater quantity and quality. Mathematical models that accurately represent these processes are also required to support sustainable development. Furthermore, a complete characterization of groundwater systems is not possible and, as a result, there will always be uncertainty associated with knowledge of these systems. This uncertainty should be accounted for when predicting groundwater quality or quality with mathematical models <...>
