The geology of earthquakes / Геология землетрясений
The history of the practice of earthquake geology extends more than a century into the past, but it is still only a fledgling field as a modern discipline. In fact, most of what we know has been learned only in the past quarter century. And so it is not surprising that this textbook is the first attempt to survey systematically the purposes, methods, and scientific principles of the geological investigation of earthquakes. Our impetus for writing this book was, in part, the frustration we felt in teaching, year after year, earthquake geology classes without the benefit of a textbook. This book began, then, as so many do, as sets of lecture notes and class handouts for graduate courses in earthquake geology. In 1986, we, together with Professors Richard Sibson and David Nash, offered a short course in earthquake geology at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in Phoenix, Arizona. The response to that course, as well as to the requests of students in our university courses, led to our combining forces to write this book. We hope that this will help our colleagues at other universities who also labor to teach this material without the benefit of a textbook. A second motivation for our effort was the need we perceived in industry, in particular the geotechnical community, but also others involved in assessing the hazards posed by earthquakes, for a book that summarizes current knowledge and methods and provides references to more detailed information. <...>
