Recent development in fluvial sedimentology. Contributions from the Third International Fluvial Sedimentology Conference / Последние достижения в области речной седиментологии

This volume brings together 36 of the manuscripts that were presented as oral or poster papers at the Third International Fluvial Sedimentology Conference hosted by Colorado State University in August, 1985. The conference was co-sponsored by the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists and the U.S. Geological Survey with additional support and cooperation from Conoco, Inc., Rocky Mountain Energy, Mobil Corporation, the Rocky Mountain Section-SEPM, and the College of Forestry and Natural Resources and the Department of Earth Resources of Colorado State University. The 59 authors and co-authors are from seven countries including Canada, China, Italy, Norway, Republic of South Africa, United Kingdom, and the United States. Fluvial systems and sedimentary rock sequences discussed range in age from Holocene to Precambrian and include such diverse areas as North America (20), Europe (7), Asia (4), Africa (2), New Zealand (1) and Iceland (1). The principal objective of the volume was to document recent developments in the application of facies analysis to the reconstruction of the architecture of fluvial systems. Reconstruction of architecture is an integral part of the overall process of basin analysis. The volume begins with an overview of the development of fluvial facies models since 1977 (Miall). In this review Miall emphasizes the development of a number of variants on existing meandering models, development of anastomosed channel and floodplain facies models, recognition of mid-channel bar complexes, and documentation of alluvial architecture from twoand three-dimensional outcrop data in conjunction with chronostratigraphic markers <...>
