Petroleum (oil and gas) is the source of more than 50% of our current global energy supplies. The combination of essential geological elements and processes that enable oil and gas to be generated and to accumulate in deposits is described as the petroleum system. Rigorous analysis of the petroleum systems in a basin is an essential requirement to assess the hydrocarbon prospectivity. Hydrocarbon potential in different sedimentary basins and evaluation through petroleum systems is an integral part of the workflow in the present hydrocarbon industry.
This book comprises 11 chapters, mostly covering the different aspects related to the petroleum systems of the Indian basins. The first chapter “Global Energy Resources and the Role of Hydrocarbons” (Wygrala) covers the concepts of conventional and unconventional petroleum systems, geologic risk factors, basin to petroleum system modelling, basin to play to prospect using petroleum systems models, the role of petroleum systems analysis in establishing the geoscience foundation for play risk analyses, and the required transition from deterministic to probabilistic exploration risk analyses in the development of prospect portfolios and assessments of undiscovered (Yet-to-Find) petroleum resources. In the context of understanding of Category I and II Indian basins undergoing different phases of exploration, a comprehensive review of all the existing, potential, and speculative petroleum systems details is synthesized and documented in the second chapter, “Present Understanding of Petroleum Systems in Sedimentary Basins of India” (Mishra and Rawat). <...>
