The present book on Recentsediments is intended for all geologists studying sedimentary rocks and all scientific workers who are interested in contemporaneous geological processes on the Earth’s surface. The book has two main tasks: to give a concise survey of the composition and genesis of Recent sediments and the laws controlling  their deposition, and to point out such sedimentological data that could be applied with advantage to the study of sediments from earlier geological periods. In writing this book I have intended to make up, at least partially, for the lack of synthetizing works that would sum up all the problems bearing on Recent sedimentary rocks. This subject is, however, so comprehensive that it is impossible to become acquainted directly with all varieties of Recent sediments. Therefore, I had to gather the necessary information from literature and discussions with respective specialists. My foremost thanks are due to those who, by profound analytical studies, have promoted the science of Recent sediments to its present-day level. Without their great efforts this book could never have been written. Further, I am much indebted to all those who in stimulating discussions have helped me to solve many difficult problems. No work of this kind can be flawless and I shall be grateful to those who will point out any deficiencies of this book or offer their constructive comments and criticisms. <...>
