The Japanese islands are located between the Asiatic continent and the ocean. In Southwest Japan the Neogene deformation was not so conspicuous as in the inner side of Northeast Japan. Therefore, the aspect of the pre-Neogene basement is better preserved in Southwest Japan. A crustal profile through the Kinki district of Southwest Japan is presented in this paper. It was compiled from various geological data and was supplemented by geophysical data with respect to the lower limit of the crust.
The upper part of the crust, in the profile, is geotectonically divided into the northern and the southern belts, which are characterised by the Upper Palaeozoic geosynclinal complex, its metamorphic derivatives, Mesozoic granites, etc. and by the late Mesozoic-Paleogene geosynclinal complex, respectively.
The geological aspect of the lower part of the crust is not well known. However, it can be said that the Palaeozoic geosyncline was not brought to birth directly on the crust of oceanic type, but on the pre-Silurian (probably Pre-Cambrian) crystalline basement. According to seismic data, the thickness of the crust exceeds 35 km in the middle of the northern belt, while it may be smaller in the southern belt.
