An introduction to the rock-forming minerals / Знакомство с породообразующими минералами

This major revision takes place some 25 years after the publication of the first edition. The intervening years have seen great changes in all aspects of the Earth Sciences, including mineralogy. There have been many improved and new techniques for investigating minerals, producing a new body of data and often a better understanding of their nature, properties and relationships. Such changes are evident in each section under which we treat each major mineral.

An introduction to the study of mineralogy / Введение в изучение минералогии

The purpose of this book is to present a broad overview of mineralogy. Although usually associated with geology, mineralogy is really a stand-alone discipline in its own right that weaves itself into such diverse fields as art, chemistry, forensic and soil science, wine production, and health-related issues, to name only a few. While this book is geared toward mineralogy and its apply in geology, it will also address mineralogy as a discipline in itself, and show you how it relates to the other sciences, art, and everyday life.

Written primarily for chemists, physicists, engineers, and students in technical colleges and universities, this book provides a first introduction to general information on mineralogy and its own properties in soils. The other properties of minerals are also presented, in the latter chapters.

This book is a product of many authors and their rich experience in researching and teaching mineralogy; in writing it, it was assumed that the reader will have a reasonable knowledge of the nature of minerals.

Analytical groundwater modeling. Theory and applications using Python / Аналитическое моделирование подземных вод. Теория и приложения с использованием Python

This book provides a detailed description of how Python can be used to give insight into the flow of groundwater based on analytic solutions. Starting with simple problems to illustrate the basic principles, complexity is added step by step to show how one-dimensional and twodimensional models of one or two aquifers can be implemented. Steady and transient flow problems are discussed in confined, semi-confined, and unconfined aquifers that may include wells, rivers, and areal recharge. Special consideration is given to coastal aquifers, including the effect of tides and the simulation of interface flow.

Application of Python allows for compact and readable code, and quick visualization of the solutions. Python scripts are provided to reproduce all results. The scripts are also available online so that they can be altered to meet site-specific conditions. This book is intended both as training material for the next generation of university students and as a useful resource for practitioners. A primer is included for those who are new to Python or as a refresher for existing users.

Apatite trace element compositions: A robust new tool for mineral exploration / Композиции микроэлементов из апатита: Новый надежный инструмент для поиска полезных ископаемых

Apatites from the major types of mainly magmatic-hydrothermal mineral deposits (30 localities, mostly in British Columbia, Canada) together with apatites from carbonatites (29 intrusive complexes) and unmineralized rocks (11 localities) have been analyzed by electron microprobe and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Discriminant analysis using Mg, V, Mn, Sr, Y, La, Ce, Eu, Dy, Yb, Pb, Th, and U reveals that apatites from mineral deposits can be distinguished from apatites in carbonatites and unmineralized rocks. Apatites from mineral deposits are characterized by higher Ca and correspondingly lower total contents of trace elements that partition onto the Ca sites (rare earth elements (REEs), Y, Mn, Sr, Pb, Th, and U) than apatites from unmineralized rocks and carbonatites.

Applied clay mineralogy. Occurrences, processing and application of kaolins, bentonites, palygorskite-sepiolite, and common clays / Минералогия глин. Возникновение, переработка и применение каолинов, бентонитов, палыгорскит-сепиолитов и обычных глин

Clays and clay minerals are very important industrial minerals. There are well over one hundred documented industrial applications of clay materials. Clays are utilized in the process industries, in agricultural applications, in engineering and construction applications, in environmental remediations, in geology, and in many other miscellaneous applications. This book is an assimilation of the major and minor uses of clays and clay minerals and explains why an understanding of the structure and physical and chemical attributes of the individual clay minerals are so important. Clay is an abundant raw material which has an amazing variety of uses and properties that are largely dependent on their mineral structure and composition. Other than the clay structure and composition, there are several additional factors which are important in determining the properties and applications of a clay. These are the non-clay mineral composition, the presence of organic material, the type and amount of exchangeable ions and soluble salts, and the texture (Grim, 1950) <...>

Applied mineralogy in mining industry / Прикладная минералогия в горнодобывающей промышленности

An evolution in applied mineralogy related to processing began in the mid 1960's, and significantly modified the scope of the field. Many new instruments were developed and enabled applied mineralogists to accurately determine a wider array of mineral characteristics than was previously possible. The results had a major impact on processing, and many operations now use applied mineralogy as a standard tool. The expanded scope of applied mineralogy made one realize that a dedicated mineralogist is essential at most large mining operations; a person who performs applied mineralogy as an adjunct to other duties can no longer develop the breadth of knowledge and experience that is required to recognize and determine mineral properties that affect different processes. It is also recognized that, to be able to assess what to look for, the applied mineralogist should be a member of a team performing investigations. <...>

Applied mineralogy of cement & concrete / Прикладная минералогия цемента и бетона

Since its inception in 1974, the “Reviews in Mineralogy” (“–and Geochemistry” from 2000) series has published over seventy volumes covering a diverse range of topics from theoretical to applied, and from very specifi c to generic. The idea for this RiMG volume was initially conceived in 2006, and the revised proposal was approved by the MSA Council in 2009.

Applied mineralogy. Technische mineralogie. Apatite its crystal chemistry, mineralogy, utilization, and geologic and biologic occurrences / Апатит, его кристаллохимия, минералогия, использование, геологические и биологические проявления

Apatite is the most abundant of the phosphatic minerals and consequently it is of great importance to industrial chemistry as a raw material. In fact, so many modern technological developments depend upon the use of phosphorus-containing compounds that a f~irly complete list would have to include dentifrices, pharmaceuticals, phosphors, rust removers, additives for motor fuels, plasticizers, insecticides and other poisons, and friction matches. The large tonnages, however, are concerned with fertilizers, phosphoric acid and detergents (principally sodium tripolyphosphate). The basic raw material, phosphate rock or phosphorite, is a sedimentary rock of which the essential mineral component is ordinarily a carbonate fluorapatite. Annual production from mining operations in the U. S. increased during 1964-1968 from about 26 to 41 million short tons, and represented between 41 and 47% of world production <...>
