Introduction to planetary science. The geological perspective / Введение в планетологию. Геологические перспективы

This textbook is intended to be used in a lecture course for college students majoring in the Earth Sciences. Planetary science provides an opportunity for these students to apply a wide range of subject matter pertaining to the Earth to the study of other planets of the solar system and their principal satellites.

Introduction to Plant Fossils / Введение в растительные ископаемые

This book introduces the reader to the study of plant fossils, and is especially aimed at those who have had little previous experience of this type of palaeontology. We have provided an illustrated text that summarises the main groups of plants that occur as fossils and explains how one should go about investigating them. Practical guidance is given on techniques that can be used to reveal hidden details of anatomical and reproductive characters, as well as the sorts of features that are used to identify some of the most commonly found plant fossils. Many of the approaches that are used to interpret plant fossils are discussed and we show how they can be used by the palaeobotanist to increase our knowledge of plant evolution, palaeoecology, palaeogeography and stratigraphy.

Introduction to process geomorphology / Введение в геоморфологические процессы

Morphologic attributes of the contemporary geomorphic landscape and its component form elements evolve from the activity of environment-regulated process domains acting in the present, and local and regional-scale process rates governed by conditions external and internal to geomorphic systems. These process–response systems establish landscape characteristics in equilibrium with the movement, storage, and transfer of energy and matter between interrelated and interdependent components of the system. Characteristics of geomorphic landscapes also evolve through time, suggesting that conditions of equilibrium and disequilibrium between opposing forces persist in the process–form adjustment. In certain instances, therefore, landscapes and their constituent landforms inherit the imprint of past process activities, and still others are relics of processes no longer active in the present <...>

Introduction to remote sensing / Введение в дистанционное зондирование

Readers of earlier editions will notice immediately that among the changes for this new, fifth edition, the most significant is the addition of a coauthor—a change that will benefit readers by the contribution of additional expertise and of another perspective on the subject matter.

Introduction to remote sensing / Введение в дистанционное зондирование

This preface presents the sixth edition of our remote sensing text. During the interval that has elapsed since our fifth edition, the pace of remote sensing has increased in several respects, expanding the scope of our text and presenting new content.

Introduction to seismology / Введение в сейсмологию

Every day there are about fifty earthquakes worldwide that are strong enough to be felt locally, and every few days an earthquake occurs that is capable of damaging structures. Each event radiates seismic waves that travel throughout Earth, and several earthquakes per day produce distant ground motions that, although too weak to be felt, are readily detected with modern instruments anywhere on the globe.

Introduction to small-scale geological structures / Введение в мелкомасштабные геологические структуры

The small-scale structures referred to in this publication are those structures of tectonic origin that can be observed with the naked eye in the field. Their scale varies broadly between that of the hand-specimen to that of the exposure, or even mountainside. Such structures are the visible effects of rock deformation caused by local stresses and movements which have been induced in the rocks by external tectonic forces of possibly unknown origin. Recognition of these minor structures, and appreciation of their origin and significance assist the field geologist to elucidate the larger-scale geological structures of his area.

Introduction to soil mechanics / Введение в механику грунтов

Soils consist of solid particles, enclosing voids or pores. The voids may be filled with air or water or both. These three soil states (or phases) can be visualized by the enlargement of three small samples of soil.

Introduction to structural geology / Введение в стурктурную геологию

Structural Geology is the study of deformed rocks. To do so, we define the geometries of rock bodies in three dimensions. Then, we measure or infer the translations, rotations, and strains experienced by rocks both during, and particularly since, their formation based on indicators of what they looked like prior to their deformation. Finally, we try to infer the stresses that produced the deformation based on our knowledge of material properties. Structure is closely related to various fields of engineering mechanics, structural engineering, and material science. <...>

Introduction to structural geology. Workbook 3. Geological maps / Введение в стурктурную геологию. Рабочая тетрадь 3. Геологическая карта

Geological maps represent the solid geology at the Earth’s surface unconcealed by vegetation, soil or buildings (figure 1a). Different rock types and formations are illustrated by different colours and/or symbols. Other features such as faults, mineral veins, coal seams, marker horizons and landslips are shown. Bedding and structural features such as cleavage and foliations are indicated by strike and dip or plunge and azimuth symbols (figure 1b).
