The Andean Porphyry Systems

The Chilean Andes comprise the most richly endowed copper province on Earth. A total resource (including production) of about 490 million tonnes of fine copper has been identified in more than 63 porphyry copper deposits and numerous prospects.

Andean porphyry deposits occur along five metallogenic belts that extend from central Chile to southern Peru and northwest Argentina. They formed between the Early-Late Cretaceous and Pliocene. Within these belts the deposits occur in clusters associated with multiphase plutonic complexes. This relationship is particularly prevalent in the Late Eocene-Oligocene belt, the most prolific of all. The time span between the oldest and youngest belt corresponds to the period in which contractional tectonism of the Andean cycle was established and developed from Late Cretaceous to Recent.

The Archean Chalice gold deposit: a record of complex, multistage, high-temperature hydrothermal activity and gold mineralisation associated with granitic rocks in the Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia

The Chalice gold deposit (~ 20 t Au produced), in the southwestern portion of the Late-Archean Norseman-Wiluna greenstone belt of the Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia, is hosted both in a sequence of intercalated mafic and ultramafic amphibolites and a post-peak metamorphism monzogranite dike. The deposit is flanked on the western side by calc-alkaline plutonic rocks, and to the east by a predominantly monzogranitic pluton, with at least four generations of monzogranitic dikes that intrude the local mine stratigraphy. Locally, four deformation events (D1–D4) have affected this sequence of amphibolites, and two stages of gold mineralisation are recognised, controlled by the progressive D2 event.

The Art and Science of Resource Estimation. A Practical Guide for Geologists and Engineers /

The Atlas of Mars. Mapping its geography and geology /

Planetary scientist and educator Ken Coles has teamed up with Ken Tanaka from the United States Geological Survey’s Astrogeology team and Phil Christensen, Principal Investigator of the Mars Odyssey orbiter’s THEMIS science team, to produce this all-purpose reference atlas, The Atlas of Mars. Each of the 30 standard charts includes: a full-page color topographic map at 1:10,000,000 scale, a THEMIS daytime infrared map at the same scale with features labeled, a simplified geologic map of the corresponding area, and a section describing prominent features of interest. The Atlas is rounded out with extensive material on Mars’ global characteristics, regional geography and geology, a Glossary of Terms, and an indexed Gazetteer of up-to-date Martian feature names and nomenclature. This is an essential guide for a broad readership of academics, students, amateur astronomers, and space enthusiasts, replacing the NASA atlas from the 1970s. <...>

The beauty of geology: art of geology mapping in China over a century /

In 1916, the first generation of geological graduates entered the China Geological Survey and opened a new era of geological survey in China. Over the past 100 years, generations of geologists have made outstanding contributions to the geological survey and prospecting for China’s prosperity. They measure the ground, search for treasures, explore the earth, and engrave the beautiful mountains and rivers.

The British Columbia sediment-hosted gold project /

In 1997 the British Columbia Geological Survey (BCGS) initiated a project to identify prospective areas for sediment-hosted gold mineralization. The inspiration for the project came from presentations and articles by Howard Poulsen of the Geological Survey of Canada (1996a, 1996b). He pointed out that there is potential to find hypogene, sediment-hosted gold mineralization in Canada akin to deposits found in Nevada. He mentioned that if an intrusive association is important to generate the mineralization, then two different geological environments might host this style of mineralization. Accreted terranes with a basement containing carbonate lithologies intruded by Mesozoic or Cenozic plutonism would be a prospective geological setting, specifically the Stikine and Quesnel terranes. The second favourable environment is within the sediments deposited along the continental margin of ancestral North America which have been cut by Mesozoic magmas, such as are found in the Kootenay Arc and Selwyn Basin (Figure 1).

Others have considered British Columbia as prospective territory for sediment-hosted gold. Early work by companies focused on the Insular Belt rocks exposed on Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlottes. These exploration programs were based largely on an epithermal-style model for the mineralization which was in favour at the time. The discovery of the Babe deposit (now called the Specogna or Cinola) in the Queen Charlotte Islands in 1970 increased the interest in this model because it was initially identified as a Carlin-type deposit (Richards et al, 1976; Champigny  and Sinclair,   1982). <...>

The business of mining mineral deposits, exploration and ore-reserve estimation.

The WA School of Mines, established in 1902, has been a core part of Curtin University since 1969 when it came on board to deliver mining education programs as part of what was then the Western Australian Institute of Technology.

As one of the first mining schools in Australia, it has adapted and expanded over more than a century to better support the education and research needs of the broader resources industry. In addition to retaining its mining roots, the School now also incorporates chemical engineering, mineral and energy economics and petroleum engineering. <...>
