Volcanism and the Earth's Atmosphere /

Volcanic activity can have a profound effect on the Earth's atmosphere and environment across many spatial and temporal scales. From being the source of most gases in the atmosphere over geologic time scales, to producing climate change, to threatening aviation, volcanic eruptions as well as non-eruptive volcanic gas and particle emissions provide a strong link between the lithosphere and the impact of the atmosphere on human activities.

Volcanoes. Eruptions and other volcanic hazards /

Natural geologic hazards arise from the interaction between humansс and the Earth’s natural processes. Recent natural disasters such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed more than a quarter million people and earthquakes in Iran, Turkey, and Japan have shown how the motion of the Earth’s tectonic plates can suddenly make apparently safe environments dangerous or even deadly. Th e slow sinking of the land surface along many seashores has made many of the world’s coastal regions prone to damage by ocean storms, as shown disastrously by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Volcanoes. Global perspectives /

Volcanology is a specialized field of geology – the science of volcano study. Volcanologists are not only the scientists who study volcanoes (mostly geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, and geodesists), but also the devoted technicians who spend their lives monitoring volcanoes at observatories.

Volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits of the world—database and grade and tonnage models /

Grade and tonnage models are useful in quantitative mineral-resource assessments. The models and database presented in this report are an update of earlier publications about volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits (Mosier, Singer, and Salem, 1983; Cox, 1986; Singer, 1986a-c; Singer and Mosier, 1986a, b). These VMS deposits include what were formerly classified as kuroko, Cyprus, and Besshi deposits.

Volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits /

Volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits are also known as volcanic-associated, volcanic-hosted, and volcano-sedimentary-hosted massive sulphide deposits. They typically occur as lenses of polymetallic massive sulphide that form at or near the seafloor in submarine volcanic environments. They form from metal-enriched fluids associated with seafloor hydrothermal convection. Their immediate host rocks can be either volcanic or sedimentary.

Volcanology updates. Transdisciplinary nature of volcano science /

Transdisciplinary approach of science appeared in recent years, partially as a result of the urgent need to deal with global and planetary changes [1–12]. Transdisciplinary science is to answer and solve environmental science questions and problems became the foundation of sustainable development, nature conservation and various environmental science education including geoeducation [13–17].

Volcanology. Processes, deposits, geology and resources /

Volcanic eruptions have been one of the most fundamental influences on the Earth’s evolution throughout its 4.54 Ga history. Volcanic eruptions formed the Earth’s crust, were the source for the atmosphere and oceans and are arguably the basis for life on Earth. Huge eruptions have almost certainly caused climate change and influenced mass extinction events.
