Geomechanics of failures. Advanced topics / Геомеханника разломов. Дополнительные темы

Geotechnical failures, specially the catastrophic ones, are an excellent experience and a source of inspiration to improve our current understanding of phenomena and our procedures and tools for analysis and prediction. This unconventional manner to learn Geomechanics is the essence of this book. In general, Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical text books describe first the concepts and the theoretical developments and then apply them to interpret or solve a particular application. This book has a different approach. The case (a failure) is first described and then an explanation is sought. This approach is developed through a set of steps which can be summarized as follows.

Geomechanics of sand production and sand control / Геомеханика выноса песка в скважинах и контроль пескопроявления

A significant portion of the world’s oil and gas reservoirs is in various degrees of unconsolidation with extensive sanding problems. The problems are observed in both production and injection wells in the oil industries. Similar problems are observed in CO2 injectors and wastewater injectors in CCS (Carbon Capture Storage) and wastewater management industries. These problems include plugging the perforations and formations of production and injection wells, plugging the downhole screens and the gravel pack, surface facility erosion, and collapse of borehole and cased hole. On the other hand, the controlled volume of sand production significantly increases the well productivity and injectivity for both light and heavy oil reservoirs. <...>

Geomechanics research. Rock mass response to mining activities. Inferring large-scale rock mass failure / Исследования в области геомеханики. Реакция горного массива на добычу полезных ископаемых. Вывод о крупномасштабном разрушении горной массы

Just a few days after I started working at a deep underground hard rock mine as a geotechnical engineer, a double fatality happened. Two miners carrying a heavy pump up a decline were killed by a rockfall. Investigation that took place described the accident as “unpredictable” and stated that the support was adequate for the prevailing conditions. One day, soon after the rockfall, whe I was walking up the decline, I noticed that at that particular spot there were some wet patches at the back and some water trickling at one sidewall.

Geomorphic hazards / Геоморфологические опасности

A geomorphic hazard results from any landform change that adversely affects the geomorphic stability of a site (Schumm, 1988) and that intersects the human use system with adverse socioeconomic impacts (White, 1974).

Geomorphic systems of North America / Геоморфологические системы Северной Америки

Geomorphology is the study of earth-surface processes and forms. As a component of the fields of geology and geography, geomorphology is particularly concerned with change: progressive changes through time or changing spatial distributions at the earth’s surface. Geomorphology as a science views the objects of its study as collections of elements in complex systems that are groupings of forms and related processes. Because these groupings have regional manifestations strongly controlled by geologic materials and structures, the geomorphic systems of North America have a definable regional expression that serves as a method of organizing knowledge. The Geological Society of America’s publication series celebrating the Decade of North American Geology and the Centennial of the founding of the organization is generally organized according to geographic regions, so it is appropriate that this companion volume to the series also adopts a regional framework (Figs. 1 and 2).

The geomorphologic divisions of the continent depicted in Figure 2 are broad generalizations. Discussions in subsequent chapters that more specifically define the extent of each division use boundaries suggested by workers several decades ago.

Geomorphological Field Manual / Руководство по полевой геоморфологии

This book is not a text on geomorphological techniques. It is intended as a field handbook to be used during the conduct of geomorphological research. Its prime purpose is to act as an aide memoire containing information essential for efficient fieldwork. One fundamental assumption made in compiling this manual is that the user is familiar with at least the essentials of the techniques that he proposes to employ. However, where possible sufficient information has been included to refresh the user’s memory on the basics of the various techniques.

Geomorphology

The word “geomorphology” is derived from the Greek roots geo (Earth), morphos (shape), and logos (study). Thus, geomorphology is the study of the shape of the Earth’s surface. Schumm (1991) defines geomorphology as the science of phenomena on or near the earth’s surface and the interactions between different types of materials and processes, including solids, liquids and gases. The effects of human activity are often crucial. Some authors consider geomorphology to be one of the most difficult physical sciences (Linton, 1964). Some authors restrict geomorphology to the study of the characteristics of sub-aerial topography but others extend it to the morphology of the ocean floors. Geomorphology also includes the investigation of landforms on other planets; this science is called planetary or extraterrestrial geomorphology (Greeley, 1985; Baker, 1981a; 1993, 2001, 2004a).

Geomorphology and engineering / Геоморфология и строительство

Many dictionaries describe engineering as the business of planning, designing, constructing, and managing machinery, roads, bridges, highways, dams, tunnels, etc. Others have defined it as the art, or even the science, of using power and materials most effectively in ways that are valuable and necessary to man. Engineering has been divided into many subfields, which represent nearly all the activities of man.

Geomorphology and land management in a changing environment / Геоморфология и землеустройство в изменяющихся условиях

This introduction highlights the practical application of geomorphology and geomorpho-logical hydrology to environmental management through four major themes: ground instability and land management, the effect of land use on the hydrological response of geomorphological systems, geomorphological aspects of environmental impact and risk, and aspects of the modelling and management of geomorphological systems undergoing environmental change. The chapter sets the volume of contributions in the context of changing environments and human impact, and brings attention to the scale problem in geomorphological research. It outlines issues and strategies of land management, and comments briefly on the prospects for “environmental geomorphology”. <...>
