The field of geotechnical earthquake engineering, like the related fields of engineering seismology and structural earthquake engineering in the broad discipline of earthquake engineering, has advanced dramatically since the first edition of this book was published. Advances have come with the occurrence and investigation of numerous earthquakes, both small and large, with the massive increases in computational power now at the hands of engineers and scientists, and with advances in the analytical tools that leverage those computational capabilities.

Following the 1995 earthquake in Kobe district, survey was conducted on the tilt of oil storage tanks in the severely shaken area. The survey consisted in measuring elevations of several points along the periphery of each tank. Some parameters indicative of levels of soundness or risk for continued operation were defined to properly analyze the vast amount of available data.

This book presents different aspects of earthquake research. In includes syntheses of recent works combined with new results and interpretations, applicable to diverse branches of earthquake seismology and geology. 
The destructive potential of earthquakes depends on their magnitude and the placement of the hypocenter. Worldwide efforts, such as the Global Seismographic Network of seismological and geophysical sensors and data centers, provides information that is essential to identify earthquake locations, understand the physics of the earthquakes and faulting mechanisms, as well as studies on paleoseismicity and earthquakes in the human history.
