Understanding an orogenic belt. Structural evolution of the Himalaya / Понимание орогенных поясов. Структурная эволюция Гималаев

Structural geology is the study of deformation features in rocks from microscopic to map scale. The required data are collected in field and supplemented by laboratory studies, aerial photographs, satellite imageries, and subsurface data (mostly obtained by geophysical methods). A geologist must explore an area with an open mind and interpretations and hypothesis must be based on actual field observations.

Understanding and reducing landslide disaster risk. Volume 2. From mapping to hazard and risk zonation / Понимание и снижение риска оползневых катастроф. Том 2. От составления карт к зонированию опасностей и рисков

More landslides can be expected as climate change exacerbates rainfall intensity. The long-term trend of the last 40 years has seen the number of major recorded extreme weather events almost double, notably floods, storms, landslides, and wildfires. Landslides are a serious geological hazard. Among the host of natural triggers are intense rainfall, flooding, earthquakes or volcanic eruption, and coastal erosion caused by storms that are all too often tied to the El Niсo phenomenon.

Understanding and reducing landslide disaster risk. Volume 4. Testing, modeling and risk assessment / Понимание и снижение риска оползневых катастроф. Том 4. Тестирование, моделирование и оценка рисков

Landslides, among the most devastating natural disasters in the world, have been, annually, killing thousands of lives, affecting millions of people, and causing billions of dollars of property damage globally. Understanding the causes of specific landslides and their failure mechanisms will help us developing appropriate mitigation measures. Specifically, as landslides directly affect our lifeline infrastructures, applying appropriate engineering judgement while designing sustainable and suitable prevention works using locally available manpower and resources is very important for any strategic landslide management planning. With the advancement of new technology and knowledge, there has been a significant enhancement in the resources available for the analyses of landslides and debris flow disasters, prior to developing their mitigation measures.

Understanding Earth / Изучая Землю

Geology is everywhere in our daily lives. We are surrounded by materials and resources extracted from the Earth, from jewelry to the gasoline we use to fuel our cars, to the water we drink. Geological science routinely informs the decisions of public policy leaders in government, industry, and community organizations. Understanding our Earth has never been more important.

Understanding fossils. An introduction to invertebate palaeontology / Изучение окаменелостей. Введение в палеонтологию беспозвоночных

Fossils are among the most highly prized natural objects in the world. They figure in our everyday lives as decorative objects in our homes, and as the dinosaur products which fill the toy and book shops and which periodically appear in the cereal packets at our breakfast tables. Collecting fossils is an absorbing pastime which grades into a passion for weekend geologists, and many students enter higher education through their interest, reading for degrees in the earth sciences which have a direct benefit for the national economy. <...>

Understanding geology through maps / Понимание геологии через карты

The geological terminology used in a course using this material is minimal and much less difficult than the new terminology required in many other science courses. The prerequisite or accompanying a geological map interpretation course would be a lecture course in first-year physical geology. For those who have not previously followed a geology course, the essential principles involved are explained as we progress. Definitions and terminology are presented incrementally and may be recognized as words or phrases that are explained in the Appendix. The full meaning or usage of terms may only become apparent later after completion of an exercise. The first three chapters essentially duplicate material from a first-year geology course.

Understanding geology through maps. Strata and plane-dipping features / Понимание геологии с помощью карт. Слои и наклонные поверхности

We are very familiar with topographic contours of landforms. Since landforms are complex surfaces, topographic contours (and bathymetric contours below water level) follow contorted paths tracing out a horizontal line on the map. It is often convenient to imagine oneself “walking out contours” and so visualize the land surface and its slopes. The closer contours are spaced, the steeper the surface. Occasionally contours merge, one above the other, where a cliff is located.

Understanding granites: integrating new and classical techniques / Понимание гранитов: интеграция новых и классических методов

Granite magmatism represents a major contribution to crustal growth and recycling and, consequently, is one of the most important mechanisms to have contributed to the geochemical differentiation of the Earth's crust since the Archaean times. The important role of granites has been acknowledged from the times of James Hutton, being an important part of Mutton's (1785) work The Theory of the Earth. Since that time, advances in Earth Sciences and the development of analytical instruments have produced a vast amount of data from granite terrains around the world (see, for instance, the Proceedings of the Hutton symposia, 1988, 1992, 1996). However, many problems still remain unsolved.

Understanding mineral deposits / Понимание (изучение) месторождений полезных ископаемых

Mineral deposits have supplied useful or valuable material for human consumption long before they became objects of scientific curiosity or commercial exploitation. In fact, the earliest human interest in rocks was probably because of the easily accessible, useful (e.g., red pigment in the form of earthy hematite) or valuable (e.g., native gold and gemstones) materials they contained at places. In modern times, the study of mineral deposits has evolved into an applied science employing detailed field observations, sophisticated laboratory techniques for additional information, and computer modeling to build complex hypotheses. Understanding concepts that would someday help geologists to find new mineral deposits or exploit the known ones more efficiently have always been, and will continue to be, at the core of any course on mineral deposits, but it is a fascinating subject in its own right, even for students who do not intend to be professional economic geologists. I believe that a course on mineral deposits should be designed as a "capstone course" that illustrates a comprehensive application of concepts from many other disciplines in geology (mineralogy, stratigraphy and sedimentation, structure and tectonics, petrology, geochemistry, paleontology, geomorphology, etc.).
