Exploration seismology deals with the use of artificially generated elastic waves to locate mineral deposits (including hydrocarbons, ores, water, geothermal reservoirs, etc.), archaeological sites, and to obtain geological information Гог engineering. Exploration seismology provides data that, when used in conjunction with other geophysical, borehole, and geological data and with concepts of physics and geology, can provide information about the structure and distribution of rock types.

The early advances in understanding the internal structure of the Earth and the nature of earthquakes were achieved with a very limited number of seismic stations. Yet, by 1914, not only the presence of a core was recognised by Oldham (1906) from his analysis of the travel times of seismic waves from 14 earthquakes across the globe, but also a good estimate of its radius had been made (Gutenberg, 1913).

Geophysics is the physics of the Earth, the science that studies the Earth by measuring the physical consequences of its presence and activity. It is a science of extraordinary breadth, requiring 10 volumes of this treatise for its description. Only a treatise can present a science with the breadth of geophysics if, in addition to completeness of the subject matter, it is intended to discuss the material in great depth.

This modern introduction to seismic data processing in both exploration and global geophysics demonstrates practical applications through real data and tutorial examples. The underlying physics and mathematics of the various seismic analysis methods are presented, giving students an appreciation of their limitations and potential for creating models of the subsurface. Designed for a one-semester course, this textbook discusses key techniques within the context of the world’s ever-increasing need for petroleum and mineral resources – equipping upper undergraduate and graduate students with the tools they need for a career in industry.

Шестая часть конспекта лекций содержит вывод обобщенных уравнений Цеппритца для воли рассеивания, образующихся при падении на границу раздела упругих сред плоских продольных (Р) и вертикально поляризованных поперечных (SV) волн. Проведен анализ поведения вторичных волн рассеивания как функций угла падения первичной продольной волны. Рассмотрены различные соотношения волновых сопротивлений контактирующих на границе раздела сред и их влияния на характеристики монотипных и обменных вторичных волн.
Материалы шестой части курса изучаются иа 16-18 лекциях и семинарских занятиях.

Пятая часть конспекта лекций посвящена исследованию упругих процессов на границе раздела двух сред с различными физическими параметрами.
В первом разделе (п. 7) части рассмотрены характеристики границы раздела, граничные условия для упругих смещений и напряжений, возможные типы первичных волн и образуемые ими границе вторичные волны.
Второй раздел (п. 8) пятой части посвящен рассмотрению явлений, происходящих при падении на границу плоской поперечной горизонтально-поляризованной (SH) волны. Рассмотрены особенности отраженной и проходящей волн при различном соотношении упругих свойств контактирующих на границе сред.
Материалы пятой части курса изучаются на 13-16 лекциях и семинарских занятиях.

This chapter develops mathematical concepts and tools underlying techniques for estimation of material structures from observations of reflected waves. These techniques belong in some sense to the theory of inverse problems for partial dierential equations, but many of them have their origins outside of modern mathematics. Most of the ideas developed in this chapter arose rst in the seismology, particularly in that branch devoted to exploration for petroleum. Therefore I shall take viewpoint and terminology from exploration seismology. A principal goal of this chapter is to provide a natural \Courant|Hilbert" setting for these ideas and terms, which play a very important role in the following chapters.<...>
