Cablebolts are high capacity flexible tendons composed of multi-wire strand which are normally installed and grouted in drilled holes at regular spacings to provide reinforcement and support of excavations in rock. They can be cut to any length and installed in single or multi-strand configurations and can be installed from small adits and tunnels (drifts) where limited clearance would preclude the use of rigid tendons.

Рассмотрен комплекс вопросов, связанных с распространением в горных выработках ударных воздушных волн, образующихся при взрывах разного вида и обрушении потолочин очистных камер. Изложены инженерные методы расчета параметров ударных волн и определения границ опасных зон их действия. Даны рекомендации по выбору способа ослабления ударных волн защитными устройствами. Во второе издание (1-е изд. 1973 г.) включены новые материалы по пре-дупреждению образования интенсивных ударных волн и их локализации при взрыве метана и угольной пыли.

For many cencuries miners have been excavating below the ground surface in their ceaseless search for minerals. Originally, these underground operations were simply a downward extension of the small excavations created to exploit surface outcrops. As mineral exploration methods became more sophisticated, resulting in the discovery of large ore bodies at considerable depth below surface, underground mining methods were developed to exploit these deposits.

In civil engineering, tunnel construction has always been based on observations far more than any other construction. Reason for this phenomenon can be seen in the fact, that there is no other condition as decisive as the changing ground conditions in underground construction. Observational methods by their nature are subject of experience, especially when using predominantly manual methods for construction. Experience can be explained as kind of data base of an individual.

Geological hazard and the lack of appropriate survey, design and construction instruments for tackling those terrains we call “difficult”, with good prospects of success, have always made the design and construction of underground works a risky affair, which could not therefore be faced with the same degree of accuracy as other civil engineering works. As a consequence they have always occupied a subordinate position with respect to similar surface constructions and in the past they were only resorted to when the latter seemed impractical or of little use.
