Атлас Ленинградской области является научно-справочным географическим и картографическим произведением, синтезирующим современные знания о природе, населении и хозяйстве региона.

Атлас содержит 140 карт. Основные масштабы тематических карт: 1 : 1 500 000, 1 : 2 000 000, 1 : 3 000 000, 1 : 5 000 000. Масштабы карт административных районов области: 1 : 165 000, 1 : 300 000, 1 : 320 000, 1 : 350 000, 1 : 400 000, 1 : 1 500 000, 1 : 550 000.

Льва Ивановича Брусницына называют «Колумбом золотых россыпей», что в образной форме верно отображает значительность совершенного им открытия. Этот уральский горняк в 1814 г. обнаружил первую в России золотую россыпь — и не случайно, а в результате целенаправленных усилий, создав новые приемы поиска и разработки россыпей. Правильность этих приемов была подтверждена всем ходом освоения Урала и Сибири. Это привело к изменению самого понятия о россыпях, сделало возможным освоение бедных рудных концентраций. Открытие Л. И. Брусницына ознаменовало начало нового этапа развития мировой горной промышленности.

Mineralogy deals with the predominantly crystalline building blocks of the geologi-cal matter surrounding us, the minerals. The distribution of gold in the lithosphere bears critically on models for gold ore deposits. One group of workers advocates derivation of gold from large masses of rock through fluid-rock reactions in the deep crust (Kerrich, 1983; Groves and Phillips, 1987; Colvine et at., 1988) while others stress the importance of relatively restricted petrogenetic groups of rocks termed source rocks that concentrate gold above the norm (Viljoen et al., 1970; Keays, 1984). It is therefore important to know the average gold contents for rock types of the lithosphere, and what concentrations are potentially indicative of mineralization. Tilling et at. (1973) noted that unaltered igneous rocks generally have less than 5 parts per billion (ppb) gold and that 10 ppb is exceeded only rarely. A survey of more recent data presented here confirms that statement. As ore deposits may concentrate gold 104 times the rock background, gold contents of only a few tens of ppb may indicate ore-forming processes.

The organization of this book follows the typical mining sequence that starts with the exploration phase aimed at delineating the mineral deposit and detailing its geology.

Geological objects can be singular, like the inverted cone-shaped diatreme of the El Teniente copper mine; more generally, they can be domains with given lithological, mineralogical, structural or alteration properties, which will be designated throughout this book under the name of ‘facies’, commonly used in geosciences. Within each facies, the metal grades have their own distribution and variability. This peculiarity will lead directly to the prediction or simulation of the grades (quantitative variables) taking into account the statistical and spatial characteristics of each facies (categorical variable).

In this book, management is defined as the process of generating plans and supervising their implementation. For a mineral resource, these plans relate to a strategy that determines how the resource is to be exploited. The process has two important aspects—one is the organizational setting within which it occurs, and the other is the set of techniques available for the analyses. Ideas in both areas have evolved rapidly in recent years and this book presents an authoritative review of the current state of the art.
